Studio and Founder Background
Yamadori Bonsai Studio is based in Switzerland, specializing in the collection, aftercare and styling of wild bonsai material sourced from the Alps and surrounding mountain regions. The term Yamadori originates from Japanese and refers to woody plants collected from their natural mountain habitat for use in bonsai creation. The studio regularly conducts field collection in the Swiss Alps, with primary species including Yew, Scots Pine and Larch. All collected material is held in recovery for at least twelve months before any styling work is undertaken.
Wild Material and Styling System
The studio follows a form-first approach, matching each tree to the style that best suits its natural growth pattern. Principal styles include Formal Upright, Informal Upright, Slanting, Semi-Cascade, Full Cascade, Literati, Raft and Windswept. Yew material collected from open valley forests is often shaped into Literati or Formal Upright forms, while Scots Pine gathered from exposed ridges and cliff faces is shaped into Cascade or Windswept compositions. All wiring, carving and root work is carried out in stages, with wound sealants and regular pruning applied to ensure the long-term health of each tree.
Representative Case Studies
The studio publishes a series of detailed case studies. The Yew (Taxus Baccata) case study documents the complete process from collection through eighteen months of establishment, initial reduction, central hollowing, repotting into an exposed-root style and final refinement. The Larch Raft case study documents the recovery of a neglected and pot-bound larch, including bark damage along the back, hormone treatment, sideways planting for new root development and eventual restyling. Both case studies combine photographs, sketches and narrative notes to guide the reader.
Staged Teaching and Bonsai Glossary
The teaching programme is divided into three stages: Beginners, Intermediates and Advanced. Beginners focus on species selection, watering, feeding and soil composition. Intermediates cover style recognition, branch selection and basic wiring. Advanced topics include carving, Jin and Shari work, and full re-styling of mature material. A separate Bonsai Glossary provides definitions for the major style categories, complementing the staged teaching with a reference resource for terminology.
Display, Visits and Contact
Case studies, teaching articles and the glossary are published in English on the studio’s official website at Yamadori.com, with photography and sketches accompanying the text. Workshop bookings, studio visits and the purchase of established yamadori material are arranged through the Contact page on the official site; please refer to the relevant page for the latest contact details. The studio also maintains a curated list of recommended books, associations and specialist nurseries for the global bonsai community.
