(Presenting Florida Bonsai to the World)的传播使命,也见证了佛罗里达州盆景社群的成长与对外交流。

近期负责编辑工作的先后包括 Adam Lavigne(自 2020 年起任编辑)、Jorge Nazario(2021 至 2022 年间作为 BSF 主席撰写主席致辞专栏)、Kathrin Harris(2022 年起任 BSF 主席,亦在杂志新近刊期中发表主席信),2025 年起 Paul Pikel 出任 BSF 出版委员会主席,负责统筹新版期刊的策划与发行。

Historical Evolution

The Florida Bonsai is the official periodical of the Bonsai Societies of Florida (BSF), published periodically by the state-wide organization. BSF itself was founded on September 15, 1973 in Tampa when delegates from ten existing Florida bonsai societies came together; the new body hosted the first Florida State Bonsai Convention later that year. In July 1975 BSF hosted the International Bonsai Congress in Miami, and the international convention returned to Florida twice thereafter, merging with the World Bonsai Friendship Federation World Bonsai Convention in 1993. The magazine has continued to fulfill the association’s stated mission of presenting Florida Bonsai to the World, while also documenting the growth of the Florida bonsai community.

Mission and Editorial Team

The magazine is produced by the BSF editorial committee. Long-time member T. Morris served as editor for many years and organized extensive silent auctions at the annual convention to subsidize the publication, anchoring the print era of the magazine. Following her passing, then-BSF president Michael Knowlton led a cost and feasibility study that concluded a print magazine could no longer be sustained by membership dues alone, given printing and postage expenses, which prompted the shift to a digital format. Recent editorial responsibilities have been carried by Adam Lavigne (editor since 2020), Jorge Nazario (BSF president 2021–2022, who contributed the President’s Message column), Kathrin Harris (BSF president from 2022, contributing in recent issues), and from 2025 Paul Pikel, who took on the role of BSF Publications Chair.

Content and Annual Output

The Florida Bonsai appears on a regular quarterly cycle following spring, summer, fall and winter seasons, and has built up an extensive archive since 2006. Public records show the magazine maintained a steady at-least-four-issues-per-year pace from 2006 through 2017; after the print edition was discontinued and reader habits shifted toward short-form social media, the title moved into a digital quarterly format. The site archive lists winter, spring, summer and autumn/winter editions released between 2020 and 2022, and an October 2025 BSF statement reaffirmed The Florida Bonsai as one of the tangible benefits the association provides for its members. The Fall 2026 issue went online on August 24 with Paul Pikel serving as editor, leading with a BSF annual convention preview and including the president’s message from Kathrin Harris, an update on next year’s convention, a how-to article on preparing trees for exhibition, upcoming events and interviews.

Editorial Character and Contributors

The Florida Bonsai draws on member-submitted writing, with contributors including practitioners, teachers and researchers from across Florida and beyond. The Summer 2022 issue featured work from contributors including Helen Johnson, whose bougainvillea was exhibited at the 2017 BSF Convention, Kathrin Harris writing on her bougainvillea, and convention photography by Paul Pikel. The October 2025 Why BSF article by then-president Kathrin Harris, accompanied by a photograph of the BSF logo tree by long-time member Ed Trout, ran as part of a board-level discussion of member benefits. The magazine also regularly covers BSF’s partnership with the Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival at Walt Disney World, where since 1997 BSF members have displayed bonsai in the Japan and China pavilions each festival season.

Digital Transformation and Recent Developments

The Florida Bonsai completed its transition from a printed periodical to a fully digital format around 2020. The move was driven by the cost analysis under President Michael Knowlton and reinforced by Mailchimp and partner-club metrics showing declining readership of long-form content, with audiences shifting to Instagram, Facebook and TikTok for short-form material, as the association confirmed in its 2025 public letter. The digital quarterly is now distributed as a free PDF download through the magazine website, with full access provided to members via local clubs or the At-Large membership category, while non-members can browse the archive covering 2006 to the present via the /magazine-archive/ section. The Fall 2026 issue has been described by the association as a brand-new Florida Bonsai Magazine, marking another refresh of editorial planning and digital delivery.
