Lily Nook

English Version

History and Founding

Lily Nook is a mail-order nursery located near Neepawa, Manitoba, Canada — the only lily-specific mail-order nursery in the country. Founder Barrie Strohman, a building contractor for over 40 years, began growing lilies as a relaxation hobby more than 30 years ago. The business was officially established in 1995 after Barrie’s brother-in-law Raymond McAllister called from England saying, “It’s about time you did something about those lilies.” With Barrie retired, it was decided that his son Nigel would take on the project, and Lily Nook was born as a commercial enterprise.

Family Legacy and Growth

Ray came over from England and worked with Nigel to design and produce the first catalog. They printed 4,000 copies at Leech Printing in Brandon, Manitoba, and mailed them to members of lily societies across the continent. The catalog format has remained essentially the same ever since, only the content has expanded. In the very first year of business, bulbs were shipped to every province in Canada, the Yukon, and the Northwest Territories, as well as every state in the United States. Business has since expanded overseas to many countries. As demand grew, Nigel sold the garden centre to focus on Lily Nook, expanding to 10 acres of growing fields with cold storage capacity, enabling both spring and fall shipping seasons. Five seasonal workers are hired each summer for planting, weeding, and harvesting.

Lily Varieties and Classifications

The nursery currently offers over 250 lily varieties, spanning 9 lily divisions and more than 2,000 different lily cultivars. Major classifications include: Asiatic lilies (early-blooming, wide color range), Martagon lilies (shade-tolerant, unique pendant flowers), Trumpet lilies (large, fragrant, trumpet-shaped blooms), Oriental lilies (large, colorful, heavily fragrant), and interdivisional hybrids such as LA (Longiflorum × Asiatic), OA (Oriental × Trumpet), and Asiapet (Asiatic × Trumpet) varieties. The website features an extensive catalog with numerous photographs and also sells lily-related books.

Mail-Order Service and Shipping

Lily Nook publishes Canada’s only lily-specific mail-order catalog, allowing customers to order from an extensive selection without visiting in person. With cold storage facilities, the nursery ships bulbs twice yearly — in spring and fall. The first year saw deliveries to all Canadian provinces and every U.S. state, with international shipping now reaching many countries worldwide. Summer staff of five handle planting, weeding, and digging to ensure top-quality bulbs.

Hybridization and Preservation

The nursery honors the tradition of collector-breeders by maintaining and preserving rare and heritage lily varieties. The founding family has long collaborated with early lily pioneers like Ed Robinson, carrying forward many classic cultivars. The website showcases a collection of original breeder varieties, providing a valuable genetic resource for lily enthusiasts.

Contact and Location

The nursery is located at 5 miles (8 km) south on Highway #5 from Neepawa, Manitoba. Customers can browse the full catalog and place orders through the website, or follow the Lily Nook Facebook page for seasonal updates and announcements.
