Notter Japan Garten was founded by Pius Notter. Its operating company, Natural Arts Services AG, has been active in Boswil, Switzerland since 1988. Pius Notter is widely regarded as a pioneering figure in European bonsai. Rather than copying Asian traditions directly, he developed a distinct design vocabulary over decades of practice. The terms Notter Garten and Notter Bonsai are now used by the trade to describe his signature style.
Japanese Garden and Bonsai Design Philosophy
The studio focuses on two complementary directions: integrating large landscape trees (Niwaki, garden bonsai) into European garden layouts, and offering shaping, pruning, and long-term care services to private collectors and corporate clients. Pius Notter notes that Japanese artisans typically train for up to eight years to master the timing of selective pruning, since the difference between a thriving and a deteriorating specimen often depends on fine judgments about how each species responds.
