Overview
Chapman Iris is a Canadian bearded iris specialty nursery founded in 1991 by hybridizer Chuck Chapman on roughly 11 acres of sandy-loam farmland northeast of Guelph, Ontario. It is among the oldest and largest bearded iris growers in Canada, breeding and selling tall, standard dwarf, intermediate, miniature tall, border, miniature dwarf and species bearded iris adapted to cold-climate Canadian gardens, with supplementary collections of Siberian and Spuria iris.
The Nursery
The property lies in Canadian plant hardiness zone 5b (approximately USDA zone 4b) on naturally buffered limestone soil at pH 7.0, which has shaped the collection’s focus on bearded iris over acid-loving Louisiana and Japanese iris. About 4 of the 11 acres are planted to bearded iris and seedling beds, with winter temperatures regularly falling below -36 °C and occasionally to -40 °C under inconsistent snow cover; the nursery responds with deeper planting, spring replacement of frost-heaved plants, controlled spring rot treatment and a burn-and-spray regime against iris borer.
Iris Classes and Bloom Season
Chapman Iris maintains the full bearded iris spectrum — Miniature Dwarf (MDB), Standard Dwarf (SDB), Intermediate (IB), Miniature Tall (MTB), Border (BB), Tall Bearded (TB) and Bearded Species — alongside Siberian and Spuria iris. Peak bloom moves through the garden from mid-May into mid-July: MDB around May 15–19, SDB around May 22–29, IB around May 25–30, TB around June 9–19, Siberian iris June 12–20 and Spuria iris July 1–15, giving visitors a sequential six-week display.
Hybridizing and New Introductions
Chuck Chapman focuses on cold-hardy bearded iris lines, releasing the 2025 Tall Bearded introduction ROSEMARY’S CENTURY — a hardy garden performer named for his 103-year-old mother-in-law Rosemary Brown — together with seven unnamed seedling selections whose adopters may suggest cultivar names. Earlier releases include the 1999 MDB BANTAM PRINCE, the 2009 SDB BLACK LIGHTNING (a ruffled near-black with violet beard) and the 2021 luminata-plicata SDB BASS NOTE, documenting a continuous hybridizing program from miniature dwarfs through tall beardeds. Cultivars are evaluated against the American Iris Society (AIS) framework — Honourable Mention (HM), Award of Merit (AM) and the annual Dykes Medal — and Chapman seedlings have received Exhibition Certificate (EC) and High Commendation (HC) recognition in AIS-accredited shows.
Ordering and Visits
The nursery sells exclusively through its website, with no printed catalogue. Minimum order is 30 dollars before packing and shipping, the order cutoff is July 24 and bearded iris ship from late July through the end of August; customers in zone 3 and colder must order by July 16 for an over-winter survival guarantee, and USA orders are paid in US dollars and consolidated through Lewiston, New York. Garden visits are by appointment; the property is generally open daily 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. during the growing season, and visitors should bring suitable footwear for muddy rows after rain.
