Apprenticeship and Artistic Origins
Michael Hagedorn’s bonsai career is rooted in a three-year apprenticeship from 2003 to 2006 under master Shinji Suzuki in Japan. During this immersive period of traditional training he systematically absorbed Japanese bonsai design logic, seasonal management, soil composition, and species-specific horticultural knowledge. In 2008 he founded his urban studio Crataegus Bonsai in Portland, Oregon, marking the start of a stable professional phase combining creation, teaching, and writing. His practice and ongoing blog focus on hawthorn (Crataegus) and other North American and Japanese species, with particular attention to design refinement and long-term horticultural care.
Studio and Seasonal Curriculum
