Mendocino Coast Bonsai

History and Founder Legacy

Mendocino Coast Bonsai was established in 1995 by Bob Shimon in Point Arena, a small coastal town in Mendocino County on the north coast of California. From the beginning, Bob Shimon focused on collecting and cultivating native west coast species for bonsai, and his work has been exhibited at the Pacific Bonsai Museum in Washington State. Over the past three decades, the nursery has remained a family-run operation, maintaining a steady rhythm of collection, repotting, training and sale without expanding into a chain.

Collection System and Geographic Setting

The nursery collects in the native coniferous and hardwood forests of Mendocino County and northern California, focusing on four primary species: Coast Redwood, Sierra Juniper, Mendocino Pygmy Cypress and Live Oak. All four species originate from high-latitude or high-elevation habitats in the American west, displaying aged shari and natural jin that suit large and medium bonsai compositions. Point Arena and the surrounding Mendocino coast feature a typical cool maritime climate with rainy winters and foggy summers, providing natural humidity for root recovery and post-collection training.

Product Line and Stock Scale

The nursery maintains between 600 and 800 collected yamadori in stock at any given time, a scale that places it among the larger small-batch bonsai nurseries in the English-speaking bonsai community. Beyond the four core species, the nursery also offers Chinese Elm stock with trunk bases of 1 to 1.75 inches, priced between 70 and 80 US dollars. The full product line combines collected trees, Joshua Roth bonsai tools, Sara Rayner and Victoria Chamberlain pots, kusamono containers, display stands and display slabs up to 40 inches across.

Show Circuit and Customer Channels

The nursery does not run an online shop. Customers typically contact Bob Shimon by phone or email to request photos and quotes for trees matching their specific interests. Each year, the nursery attends a series of west coast bonsai conventions and shows; the full schedule is maintained on the Show Schedule page of the official website. Private visits to the Point Arena nursery are also available by appointment. Current contact details and the show calendar are listed on the Contact Us page of the official website.

Bonsai Community and Pot Resources

The nursery maintains long-standing relationships with multiple North American bonsai societies and regularly exhibits at events including the American Bonsai Association annual show, the Redwood Empire Bonsai Society show, the East Bay Bonsai Society show and the Pacific Bonsai Expo. Acting as a stable west coast yamadori supplier, the nursery also distributes Sara Rayner and Victoria Chamberlain pots, Joshua Roth tools and a wide range of display stands and slabs to customers across North America and overseas, forming a compact bonsai resource node linking trees, tools, pots, stands, slabs and the west coast bonsai society network.
