Historical Evolution

Xinjiang Agricultural University traces its origins to the Bayi Agricultural College, founded in 1952 by General Wang Zhen on the basis of the Second Infantry School of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army, with the approval of Chairman Mao Zedong and the Central Military Commission. It was the first formal university of its kind established by the Communist Party of China in Xinjiang after the founding of the People’s Republic. The school was transferred to the People’s Government of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in 1958 and renamed Bayi Agricultural College of Xinjiang; in 1995 it received approval from the former State Education Commission to adopt its present name, Xinjiang Agricultural University. According to the university profile released in June 2026, the university now operates four campuses — Laomancheng, Yaxin, Lugang and Tiangeer — with the Tacheng campus currently under planning and construction.

Discipline System

Built around water conservancy and hydropower, cotton, grain, healthy animal husbandry, specialty forestry and fruit, intelligent agricultural machinery manufacturing and ecological environment protection, the university maintains a multi-disciplinary structure anchored in agricultural sciences. It comprises 24 colleges and 1 teaching division, offering 7 postdoctoral research stations, 8 first-level doctoral degree authorization points, 1 professional doctoral authorization point, 19 first-level master’s degree authorization points, 14 professional master’s authorization points and 74 undergraduate programs spanning agriculture, science, engineering, economics, management, literature and law. Plant and animal science, agricultural science, and environmental science and ecology rank in the top 1 percent of ESI globally, and the university hosts one national key discipline, one national key cultivating discipline, three key disciplines of the National Forestry and Grassland Administration, and the Xinjiang sub-center of the National Key Laboratory of Grassland Innovation and Grassland Agricultural Ecosystem.
