历史沿革
湖南农业大学是湖南省属多科性农业院校, 由湖南省人民政府举办, 中华人民共和国农业农村部与湖南省人民政府共建, 行政上归属湖南省, 业务上接受农业农村部指导。学校坐落于湖南省长沙市芙蓉区东湖街道, 校园北邻人民东路, 南临浏阳河, 总占地面积约 2.27 平方公里, 设有东湖、金岸、芷兰、丰泽四大住宿片区, 校园环境幽雅, 是读书治学的理想园地。
学科专业与学院布局
学校办学可追溯至 1903 年 10 月 8 日由周震鳞、俞蕃同、许直等人在长沙创办的修业学堂, 初名修业, 是湖南近代农业教育的源头之一。1923 年学校创办农业部, 1930 年更名为湖南私立修业农业学校, 1934 年更名为湖南私立修业高级农业职业学校。1951 年 3 月, 院系调整中湖南省立修业农林专科学校与湖南大学农业学院合并组建为湖南农学院, 同年 11 月毛泽东主席亲笔题写校名。1994 年 2 月经教育部批准更名为湖南农业大学, 沿用至今。
师资队伍与人才培养
学校设有 20 个学院, 学科涵盖农、工、文、理、经、管、法、医、教、艺等 10 个门类, 设 80 个本科专业; 拥有 11 个博士学位授权一级学科、24 个硕士学位授权一级学科、14 个硕士专业学位授权类别; 设有博士后科研流动站。动植物科学、农业科学、环境/生态学、化学、工程科学、生物与生化 6 个学科 ESI 排名进入全球前 1%。学校入选国家”中西部高校基础能力建设工程”与湖南省”国内一流大学”建设高校, 校园内思源馆、第一教学楼及柳子明故居被长沙市人民政府列为市级不可移动文物保护单位。
科研平台与社会服务
学校汇聚了 1198 名全职教职工, 其中包括 3 位中国工程院院士、226 位博士研究生导师、432 位硕士研究生导师、234 位教授、515 位副教授, 4 人获评国家有突出贡献专家; 设有 1 个国家重点学科、1 个农业农村部重点学科、3 个湖南省国内一流建设学科、7 个湖南省国内一流培育学科。自”九五”以来学校累计获 182 项科技奖励, 其中国家级 13 项、省部级 169 项, 主持国家级科研项目 145 项、省部级 918 项; 知名校友包括中国工程院院士袁隆平 (杂交水稻之父)、官春云 (油菜种植研究专家)、邹学校 (辣椒遗传育种专家) 等。学校教学科研综合基地建在浏阳市沿溪镇原种场, 支撑乡村振兴与农业现代化研究。
国际合作与对外交流
学校与 40 多个国家的 130 多所大学及政府机构、国际机构建立密切联系, 1978 年起开始派出教员、学生赴海外交流, 1998 年开始招收留学生。2019 年中非经贸博览会之后, 学校成立”中非农业发展与合作基地”, 整合农业研究资源, 帮助非洲邦交国改良农业技术, 培育农业人才。学校位列 2023 年上海软科世界大学学术排名 801-900, 2024 年 CWTS 莱顿排名世界第 840 位, 在农业科学领域具有较强国际影响力。
Historical Evolution
Hunan Agricultural University (HUNAU) is a public agricultural university in Changsha, Hunan, China. The Hunan Provincial Government administers the school; the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs co-builds it alongside the province. The main campus sits in the Donghu sub-district of Furong District in eastern Changsha, bordered by Renmin East Road to the north and the Liuyang River to the south. With experimental land included, the university covers roughly 2.27 square kilometers.
Academic Disciplines and Colleges
The school’s origin goes back to 1903, when educators Zhou Zhenlin, Yu Fantu and Xu Zhi set up the Xiuye Academy in Changsha on October 8. An agriculture department was added in 1923. After several name changes — Xiuye Agricultural School, Xiuye Senior Agricultural Vocational School — the Hunan Provincial Xiuye Forestry and Agricultural Junior College merged with the agriculture college of Hunan University in March 1951 to form the Hunan Agricultural College; Mao Zedong inscribed the school name that November. The college adopted the current name Hunan Agricultural University in February 1994 with the approval of the Ministry of Education.
Faculty and Talent Development
The university runs 20 colleges and roughly 80 undergraduate programs across agriculture, engineering, science, economics, management, law, medicine, education and the arts. It grants doctoral degrees through 11 first-level disciplines, master’s degrees through 24 first-level disciplines and 14 professional degree categories. Six fields — plant and animal science, agricultural science, environmental and ecological science, chemistry, engineering, and biology and biochemistry — rank in the global top 1% by ESI. The school is listed in the national Mid-West Universities Basic Capacity Building Project and is part of Hunan’s “Domestic First-Class University” initiative.
Research Platforms and Social Services
Around 1,198 full-time faculty work at HUNAU, including three fellows of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 226 doctoral supervisors, 432 master’s supervisors, 234 professors and 515 associate professors; four scholars hold the title of National Outstanding Expert. Since the Ninth Five-Year Plan, the school has received 182 science and technology awards (13 national, 169 ministerial or provincial), and led 145 national-level and 918 provincial-level research projects. Alumni include Yuan Longping, the “father of hybrid rice,” and academicians Guan Chunyun (rapeseed research) and Zou Xuexiao (pepper genetics and breeding). The teaching and research base in Yuanxi Town, Liuyang City supports rural revitalization work.
International Cooperation and Engagement
HUNAU has ties with more than 130 universities, government bodies and international organizations in over 40 countries. It began sending faculty and students abroad in 1978 and started enrolling international students in 1998. After the 2019 China-Africa Economic and Trade Expo, the university set up the China-Africa Agricultural Development and Cooperation Base to share agricultural technology and train agricultural professionals with African partners. HUNAU ranks in the 801-900 band of the 2023 ShanghaiRanking Academic Ranking of World Universities, and 840th globally in the 2024 CWTS Leiden Ranking.
