History: From Swiss Tannery to German Fertilizer Plant
Hauert MANNA Düngerwerke GmbH is a German fertilizer company that links Swiss family heritage with local production. Headquartered in Nuremberg (Nürnberg) in Bavaria, it serves hobby gardeners, commercial landscapers and farmers across the German-speaking market. Its Swiss parent, Hauert HBG Dünger AG, traces back to 1663, when Adam Hauert acquired a tannery in Grossaffoltern in the Canton of Bern. The family gradually moved from leather-making into fertilizer production in 1929, and today the business is run by the twelfth generation of the Hauert family. In 2018 the Swiss parent acquired the long-established German brand MANNA and renamed its German subsidiary Hauert MANNA Düngerwerke GmbH, keeping MANNA’s recognition in the German gardening market while bringing Swiss formulations, processes and quality systems to local production. The Hauert family’s fertilizer business began on 1 August 1929, when Alexander Hauert and his son Johann founded the Kollektivgesellschaft Hauert & Co. in Suberg, focusing on organic horticultural fertilizers. The company developed its first controlled-release fertilizer, Hato, in 1948 and brought modern controlled-release products to the European market in 1972 with the Tardit and Osmocote brands. Hans-Jürg Hauert took over management in 1974, the in-house trial and advisory laboratory was set up in 1985, and Biorga AG was acquired in 1988. The sales partnership Hauert Biorga Geistlich followed in 1991. In 2004 Hauert & Co. was reorganised into the public company Hauert HBG Dünger AG, with Philipp Hauert as its managing director from 2006. The 2007 acquisition of the German fertilizer maker Günther Cornufera brought the group into Germany with the founding of Hauert Günther Düngerwerke GmbH in Nuremberg. The Hauertkugel slow-release ball fertilizer followed in 2012, the methylene-urea cooperation with the Dutch company Chemcom in 2015, the acquisition of the Swiss turf specialist Swiss Green Sportstättenunterhalt AG in 2017, and the acquisition of MANNA and rebranding of the German subsidiary in 2018. In 2022 a new bio-fertilizer plant was opened in Ammerbuch in Baden-Württemberg, transferring the Swiss bio formulations to German soil.
In-house Processes and Trial Facilities
The group has developed proprietary processes for both fertilizer granulation and nutrient release. The Sphero process binds organic and organic-mineral raw materials into dust-free, evenly sized compound granules in which every single granule carries the same nutrient content: fast initial effect, controllable long-term release, improved soil structure and soil life. It runs on two production lines, in the Bernese Seeland and in Ammerbuch. The Granutec process produces dust-free, high-quality mineral granules, suited to turf-specific fertilizers and any application demanding strict uniformity. Further in-house processes include the Kompaktor (compaction), Würfelpresse (cubic press), Pelletierung (pelletising) and various coated controlled-release granulates, together forming five granulation routes that cover the particle-size and release-curve requirements of gardens, turf and speciality crops. For research and development, the group maintains an accredited laboratory in Switzerland that analyses soils, substrates, root zones and composts and has run a turf trial field the size of half a football pitch since 1998. From 2015 the trial field has compared topsoil versus DIN-conformant root-zone constructions and robotic versus sickle-bar mowing regimes, with weekly scoring of growth, colour, disease and weed pressure during the vegetation period.

Around three core brands, Hauert MANNA organises a product portfolio that covers different customer groups and use cases. The Hauert main brand offers mineral, organic and organic-mineral fertilizers in both solid and liquid form, combining biological and mineral raw materials to tailor nutrient supply to specific crops and growing systems. The MANNA main brand addresses home gardens, balconies and lawns, with a range of controlled-release products of different mechanisms, a dedicated Manna Bio line for biological cultivation and targeted solutions for professional users.
