History
Buchanan’s Native Plants was founded in 1986 by Donna Buchanan and her sister Virginia DeCamp in Houston Heights. Donna had been reading Sally Wasowski’s book Native Texas Plants and wanted a nursery that specialized in native plants and perennials — a kind of shop she could not find at the time. The first store opened on Heights Blvd, next to Heights Station Antiques and Hickory Hollow restaurant, selling natives, perennials, herbs, antique roses and seasonal Christmas trees.
Location History
In 1989 the sisters took over All Green Nursery on Telephone Road in Southeast Houston, a “mom and pop” operation that had been running for about 40 years with a stable clientele and two long-time employees, Frank Ramos and Salvador Saavedra. They bought the current 11th Street property in 1992, sold All Green in 1994, and consolidated everything onto the new, larger site. Salvador Saavedra is still on the team today.
Native Plants and Organic Gardening Focus
The garden center still centers on Texas native plants and organic gardening. Stock covers hardy perennials, herbs, vegetables, trees, shrubs, roses (including antique, Earth Kind and Knock Out varieties grown in Texas), plus tropicals, cacti, succulents, orchids, pottery, mulches and composts. The online Plant Library catalogs 1,255 entries, organized into annuals, perennials, native trees, herbs, roses, shade shrubs and similar categories. The site also walks customers through certifying their garden as a Monarch Waystation for migrating butterflies.
Family Stewardship and Day-to-Day Operations
Day-to-day operations are now run by Donna’s son Zach Buchanan and his wife Heather Buchanan, joined by their two daughters Ella and Alice. Zach studied art history at the University of Houston and grew up in the Heights. The nursery is a member of the Texas Nursery & Landscape Association (TNLA), which places it among the recognized independent garden centers in the state.
Customer Programs and Community Involvement
Ongoing customer programs include the Gardener’s Rewards points program, free in-store classes and talks (covering tomatoes, bird-friendly gardens, and similar topics), the annual Fall Fest and Holiday Open House, the Dream School Garden Giveaway for schools, and gift-card donations to schools, garden clubs and 501(c) organizations. The store maintains its own YouTube channel, a library of PDF gardening tip sheets, and a weekly “This Week at Buchanan’s” newsletter covering seasonal gardening, local events and birdlife around Houston.
