Madame A. Company Overview
MEILLAND International is one of the world’s leading rose (Rosa) breeding and Plant Breeders’ Rights (PBR) management companies, headquartered in Le Cannet-des-Maures in the Provence region of southeastern France (Var department, postal code 83340). The Meilland family has been breeding roses since 1850 and is now in its sixth generation. The company remains 100% family-owned. MEILLAND International focuses on hybridising new rose varieties, securing intellectual property protection, and licensing production rights worldwide. It operates alongside sister entities Selection New Plant and STAR® Roses and Plants (USA) within the broader Groupe Meilland.
Breeding and Intellectual Property
MEILLAND International’s research station in Le Cannet-des-Maures carries out 20,000–30,000 manual cross-pollinations each year (April to late July), based on 2,000–2,500 cross combinations. Roughly 150,000–200,000 seeds are sown each season. After rigorous multi-stage evaluation, the best candidates are sent to about 15 climate-trial stations across multiple continents. Selection takes 8–10 years for garden roses and 4–6 years for cut-flower roses, and only about ten varieties reach commercialisation per year. The company currently holds more than 1,000 plant variety rights and 500 trademarks across 40+ countries, with licensing operations in more than 60 countries; international sales account for over 80% of its revenue.
Product Lines and Hall of Fame Roses
MEILLAND International’s catalogue is divided into Traditional Garden Roses (ROMANTICA®, PERFUMELLA®, PRETTY POLLY®, SUNBLAZE®), Landscape Roses (DRIFT®, KNOCK OUT®, FRIENDLY®, MEIDILAND®, ZEPETI®, STREET COLORS®, ALL THE BEST®), Cut Flowers and Innovations. Six of its varieties have been inducted into the World Federation of Rose Societies’ Hall of Fame — more than any other breeder: ‘Madame A. Meilland’ (also known as ‘Peace’, ‘Gioia’, ‘Gloria Dei’), ‘PAPA MEILLAND®’ (Meicesar), ‘BONICA®’ (Meidomonac), ‘PIERRE DE RONSARD®’ (Meiviolin), ‘COCKTAIL®’ (Meimick) and ‘KNOCK OUT®’ (Radrazz, bred by Bill Radler in the United States and distributed globally by Meilland). Since the 1970s the company has run a phytosanitary-free selection programme across five pedoclimatic zones, breeding disease-resistant landscape roses suitable for sustainable, low-maintenance plantings.
Global Network and Production Scale
The broader Groupe Meilland employs more than 600 people, including 30 agronomists and technicians, with consolidated annual turnover of approximately 18 million euros for MEILLAND International alone. Its production and trial sites span France, Spain, the Netherlands and California, totalling around 600 hectares of nursery and about 8 million rose plants produced per year. Within Europe, the group operates 14 hectares of greenhouses and 240 hectares of trial fields, plus 20,000 m³ of cold-storage capacity. MEILLAND International distributes its varieties through more than 50 licensed producers and regional partners, including Universal Plantas (Spain), STAR® Roses and Plants (USA / Canada), Corporate Roses (Australia, garden roses), Selection Meilland Australia (Australia, cut flowers) and Keisei Rose Nurseries (Japan / Korea), and participates in more than 30 international trade shows each year.
