杜鹃花品种基金会和植物园 (Rhododendron Species Foundation & Botanical Garden, 简称 RSF / RSBG) 是一家成立于上世纪六十年代中期的非营利性机构, 总部位于美国华盛顿州联邦路市 (Federal Way), 致力于杜鹃花属植物的迁地保护、品种收集、科学研究、公众教育与展示, 园方同时管理着位于联邦路市韦尔豪泽公司园区内的一片 22 英亩林地花园, 是全球规模最大的杜鹃花物种专类园之一, 也是太平洋西北地区少数长期专注单一属种活体迁地保护的研究型植物园之一。

创立历史

基金会源自上世纪六十年代初期美国杜鹃花学会太平洋西北分会成员关于杜鹃原生种保护的一次讨论, 创始人们意识到野外杜鹃栖息地持续遭到破坏, 遂决定筹设专门机构以保留尽可能完整的杜鹃花物种资源, 初期种苗从英国多家历史名园与加拿大英属哥伦比亚大学之间辗转入境, 在俄勒冈州与华盛顿州之间数度迁址, 至七十年代中期由韦尔豪泽公司在联邦路市新落成的企业园区内永久划拨土地, 整个收藏才最终在华盛顿州落地生根并向研究界与公众持续开放, 之后又陆续发展出会籍计划、种苗目录、年度学术研讨会与种子交换等机制, 形成现在以保育研究为核心的教育型植物园运营模式。

杜鹃收藏

园区目前保存着超过七百种杜鹃花原种, 来源覆盖北美、欧洲、亚洲北部, 以及东南亚和澳大利亚北部等热带高海拔地区, 在已知的杜鹃花属一千余个野生种中, 这里汇集了绝大多数在温带与亚热带气候下可以露天或温室栽培的代表类型, 收藏按物种的地理来源分区种植, 访客可沿小径依次穿梭于东亚-喜马拉雅、北美西海岸、地中海与东南亚热带类型的种植区, 收藏同时也是研究机构与企业育种单位借阅种质与文献的重要来源, 园方每年通过种子目录与种苗分销把稀有物种推广给会员、合作植物园与种子保育网络。

园区设施

园区除了主体林地花园外, 还配有一座以英国康沃尔为灵感的温室 (Rutherford Conservatory) 与一座维多利亚风格的树桩园 (Victorian Stumpery), 前者栽培来自东南亚热带高海拔地区的杜鹃亚属与多种苦苣苔科、兰科、桫椤科植物, 后者与 Hardy Fern Foundation 合作, 是全球规模最大的公共树桩展示园之一, 此外访客中心兼营植物商店, 销售由园方自己温室繁育的稀有植物与周边园艺商品, 自助导览手册与季节性地图在入口处免费领取, 整个园区按太平洋西北原生林地貌设计, 林下搭配大量山月桂、铁线莲与本土蕨类。

教育与保育

基金会以活体收藏为核心开展年度学术研讨、专题讲座、自助导览与针对会员的内部课程, 园方同时与多家大学、地区植物园与国际杜鹃保育网络交换种子与花粉, 在迁地保护、野外回归、稀有物种繁殖等领域持续输出研究数据, 出版物与种苗目录是公众了解保育进展的重要窗口, 基金会也通过会员计划吸收支持者, 会员除获得年度种苗购买权、园区免费入场与内部刊物外, 也是维持这处活体植物博物馆长期运营的重要力量, 公众可通过官方网站与社交媒体了解开放时间、活动安排与志愿者招募信息。

About the Foundation

The Rhododendron Species Foundation & Botanical Garden (RSF / RSBG) is a non-profit organization established in the mid-1960s and headquartered in Federal Way, Washington, USA. It is dedicated to the conservation, scientific study, cultivation, and public display of Rhododendron species, and operates a 22-acre woodland garden on the Weyerhaeuser corporate campus. The garden is among the largest collections of Rhododendron species in the world and one of the few research-oriented botanical institutions in the Pacific Northwest focused on a single genus.

Founding History

The Foundation grew out of a 1960s conversation among Pacific Northwest members of the American Rhododendron Society, who were alarmed by the ongoing loss of wild Rhododendron habitat. After a pioneering visit to British gardens and the routing of early propagation through Canadian partners, the collection moved several times between Oregon and Washington before being given a permanent home in the mid-1970s on land made available by the Weyerhaeuser Company. Subsequent decades saw the addition of a membership program, a seed-and-plant catalog, an annual symposium, and a public opening schedule that continues to this day.

Plant Collection

The garden preserves more than seven hundred Rhododendron species, drawn from the temperate regions of North America, Europe, and Asia as well as the tropical highlands of Southeast Asia and northern Australia. Within the genus of more than one thousand wild species, the collection represents the great majority of taxa that can be grown in temperate or warm greenhouse conditions. Plants are arranged by geographic origin, and the collection also serves as a working gene bank for universities, breeders, and conservation networks around the world.

Garden Features

In addition to the main woodland garden, the site includes a glasshouse inspired by Cornish conservatories and a Victorian-style stumpery developed in partnership with the Hardy Fern Foundation, one of the largest public stumpery displays anywhere. A year-round plant shop at the Visitor Center sells rare species propagated in the Foundation’s own production greenhouses, and seasonal self-guided maps are available at the entrance. The landscape is designed around the native Douglas-fir and western red cedar canopy typical of the Pacific Northwest.

Education and Conservation

The Foundation hosts an annual Rhododendron Species Symposium, self-guided tours, members-only classes, and an extensive seed-exchange program. It cooperates with universities, regional botanical gardens, and international Rhododendron networks on ex-situ conservation, propagation research, and rare-species recovery. Public visitors can follow the latest conservation updates, event schedules, and volunteer opportunities through the official website and the Foundation’s social-media channels; member support remains essential to keeping this living plant museum open year-round.
