From Tonghai Agricultural School to the College

The academic lineage of the College of Horticulture and Plant Protection at Yangzhou University can be traced back to the Tonghai Agricultural School founded by Zhang Jian in 1902. During the 1952 nationwide restructuring of higher-education departments, the agricultural section of Nantong College and the agronomy programme of Jiangnan University (established in 1946) were merged into the Subei Agricultural College, which set up a plant protection track. In 1971, Subei Agricultural College merged with the Nanjing Agricultural College (which had relocated to Yangzhou) to form the Jiangsu Agricultural College, under which a Department of Plant Protection was established and began admitting students in 1972. In 1992, six Yangzhou-based institutions including Jiangsu Agricultural College merged into Yangzhou University, with the former Department of Plant Protection becoming part of the university’s College of Agriculture. In September 2006, the university separated the Department of Horticulture and the Department of Plant Protection from the College of Agriculture to establish the College of Horticulture and Plant Protection; in 2022 this college was reorganised into two separate units, the College of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture and the College of Plant Protection. Undergraduate teaching in horticulture can be traced to the fruit-tree and vegetable programmes started in 1971; in 1982 the college was among the first in China to combine the fruit-tree and vegetable majors into a single horticulture programme, in 1987 ornamental horticulture was added, and in 2016 landscape architecture was added, eventually stabilising three undergraduate directions: horticulture, landscape gardening and landscape architecture.

Disciplines, Programmes and Degree Authority

During the period of the College of Horticulture and Plant Protection, the college offered five undergraduate programmes: plant protection, ecology, horticulture, landscape gardening and landscape architecture. Plant protection was a national first-class undergraduate programme and a pilot programme of the national outstanding agriculture and forestry talent training plan, while horticulture, landscape gardening and landscape architecture were listed in national or provincial first-class programme sequences. Plant protection was a key discipline of Jiangsu Province during the 13th and 14th Five-Year Plan periods, and horticulture and landscape gardening were school-level featured disciplines. On the degree side, the college held a first-level doctoral programme and a first-level postdoctoral station in plant protection, three second-level doctoral programmes in plant pathology, agricultural entomology and pest control, and pesticide science, and three self-established second-level doctoral programmes in invasion biology and biosafety, resistance and resource use of horticultural plants, and grassland landscape plants and green-space planning. It also had one first-level master’s programme, five second-level master’s programmes, and one professional master’s programme in agronomy (resource use and plant protection). All teaching and research took place on the Yangzhou University campus.

Faculty and Research Platforms

During the period of the College of Horticulture and Plant Protection, the college had 57 full-time faculty members, including 22 professors and research fellows, 18 associate professors and associate research fellows, and 14 doctoral supervisors. All faculty under 45 held doctoral degrees. The team included scholars selected for the national Hundred-Thousand-Ten Thousand Talents Project, recipients of the State Council Special Allowance, experts on the national industrial technology system and Jiangsu Distinguished Professors. The college ran a postdoctoral station in plant protection as a first-level discipline, supported platforms for plant pathology and agricultural entomology doctoral training, and operated teaching and research facilities including a 500-square-metre intelligent greenhouse and a 300-mu demonstration base for integrated pest management (Gaoyou campus of the Yangzhou University modern agricultural science and education park). Eleven research teams worked on areas such as insect ecology and integrated management of rice pests, and the college hosted nodes of the Ministry of Education international cooperation joint laboratory, the Ministry of Agriculture’s Yangtze River basin rice-crop technology innovation centre, the Jiangsu Green Pesticide Engineering Research Centre and a pesticide registration trial platform of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs.

Research Output and Extension Work

During the period of the College of Horticulture and Plant Protection, faculty members led or participated in more than 180 projects funded under the National Natural Science Foundation, the National Key Research and Development Programme and other sources, with cumulative funding of more than 100 million yuan. The college published more than 100 SCI and EI papers each year on average, won eight provincial or ministerial science and technology awards, and obtained 62 authorised invention patents; more than 540 high-level papers were published in journals such as PNAS and Annual Review of Entomology, and nine monographs were produced. The research results on the outbreak mechanism and sustainable management of rice planthoppers in the middle and lower Yangtze River and on the disaster mechanism and sustainable control of major crucifer vegetable pests each won a second prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award. On the teaching side, faculty members won two second prizes of the national teaching achievement award, one national first-class undergraduate course and two provincial first-class undergraduate courses. Students won a national grand prize in the Challenge Cup “Revealing the List” special contest, and silver and grand prizes in the China International “Internet+” College Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition and the National College Student Plant Protection Professional Ability Competition. The college actively served local agriculture through provincial science-and-technology outreach in Jiangsu and worked with Jiangsu Agricultural Reclamation and other units, applying green pest-control technologies across more than one million mu and helping local farmers increase their income by more than two billion yuan; an urban pest-management team also provided technical support for urban greening and public health.

International Cooperation and Talent Development

During the period of the College of Horticulture and Plant Protection, the college maintained cooperation with universities and research institutes in more than ten countries, including the United States, Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom, Germany, Russia, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Slovenia, South Korea, Japan and the International Rice Research Institute, jointly running international exchanges for undergraduates and graduate training. The college hosted several international and national academic conferences and welcomed more than 100 visiting scholars from China and abroad in recent years. It offered the all-English course Advances in Resource Use and Plant Protection Technology and built an online teaching platform drawing on teaching resources from international institutions including Cornell University, broadening students’ international perspective and giving them access to the frontier of plant protection. The undergraduate employment rate and postgraduate admission rate remained above 98 percent and 60 percent respectively, with about 30 percent of graduates continuing their studies at well-known institutions such as Stanford University, Columbia University, Zhejiang University and China Agricultural University. Graduates found positions with customs offices at various levels, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, local agricultural and rural bureaus, multinational corporations and large state-owned enterprises. Alumni included national model workers, recipients of the China Youth May Fourth Medal, winners of the Ho Leung Ho Lee Science and Technology Innovation Award and recipients of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars.
