(All About Bonsai Study Group)、榕树研习组 (Ficus Study Group) 等专题研习组在年内滚动开班.
Founding and Early History
Founded in 1965, San Diego Bonsai Club is one of the oldest bonsai societies in the state of California. Its Articles of Incorporation were filed with the State of California on September 19, 1965, and the club became a registered non-profit on October 22, 1965, with 12 founding members. On December 27, 1965, the club affiliated with the San Diego Floral Association. The first annual bonsai show was held May 27-29, 1966 at the Floral Building (now House of Italy) in Balboa Park. By December 1975 the membership had grown to 80. In November 1975 SDBC joined Bonsai Clubs International (BCI), and on January 1, 1974 the first monthly newsletter was mailed to 94 members. In 1988, club member Bob Dalager won the logo design competition with a hand-drawn entry; Fred Miyahara refined it into the current stylized bonsai silhouette, and Ocean Beach jeweler Gary Gilmore cast silver and gold pins that were presented to founding members such as Maude Laracy.
Collections and Bonsai Pavilions
SDBC maintains two long-term public bonsai collections. The first is the Bonsai Pavilion at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park in Escondido, which SDBC helped fund in 1984 with a $1,000 donation. In 1987 John Naka donated a California juniper (Juniperus californica) to the collection, followed by additional specimens from Mas Takanashi, Frank Dixon, John Dayton, John Jackson, Ted Schwartz, the estate of Melba Tucker, Frank Goya, Cap Puliafico, Sy Dayton, Jon and Terri Petrescu, and others. The current curated list spans more than ten species including Juniperus californica, Liquidambar orientalis, Ulmus parvifolia ‘Catlin’, Taxodium distichum, Ficus salicaria, Juniperus procumbens ‘Nana’, Olea europaea and Ginkgo biloba. The second collection is housed at the Japanese Friendship Garden in Balboa Park, where a member volunteer serves as curator. Both collections are open to the public free of charge and serve as SDBC’s primary outreach windows for the ancient art.
Education, Classes and Member Development
SDBC operates a multi-tiered education program coordinated by its Vice President of Education, currently Bob Hale. Beginner classes (Class session 1-3) are held in Room 104 of the Casa del Prado at 8:30 AM on the regular monthly meeting day (typically the second Sunday). Intermediate and advanced workshops and Skills Classes are held in Room 101, the main meeting room, at the same time or after the meeting. Specialized study groups including the Shohin Study Group, All About Bonsai Study Group, and Ficus Study Group run on a rolling schedule. The Larry Ragle Scholarship funds advanced study outside the club. One-on-one Private Lessons are available with senior members. SDBC also invites visiting bonsai masters such as Cesar Ordoñez for hosted workshops at members’ homes; the July 11 olive workshop at Fred Miyahara’s home was priced at $200 per attendee. Sign-ups open two months ahead through SDBC meetings, with remaining slots posted on the SDBC website.
Shows, Field Trips and Community Events
SDBC hosts two annual bonsai shows: a Spring Show in April and a Fall Show on the last weekend of September at Casa del Prado in Balboa Park. The Spring 1978 show recorded 29 members displaying trees and 2,873 visitors, a participation record that stood for decades. The Spring 1979 show exceeded 3,200 visitors, and the Fall 1974 show marked the first time SDBC held an autumn exhibition. Members have been allowed to sell trees at the shows since 1980, with SDBC retaining 20% of sales to fund operations. The regular monthly meeting convenes on the second Sunday at 10:30 AM at Casa del Prado, except in May (Safari Park field meeting and picnic) and October (Lake Poway picnic and fundraiser auction, or Casa del Prado Bonsai Blast). Field trips (two or three per year) take members to other collections, habitats and bonsai nurseries with coach transportation from San Diego. A monthly sales table at every meeting offers books, tools, pots and accessories.
Industry Partnerships and Strategy
Official Site: SDBC participates in the wider American and California bonsai association network through several formal channels. In 1979 SDBC member Jim Barrett was elected the first president of the newly formed Golden State Bonsai Federation (GSBF), and demonstrated at the January 1979 SDBC meeting that same year. From November 13-15, 1981, SDBC hosted the GSBF annual convention at the Hilton Hotel on Mission Bay under the chairmanship of former SDBC president Dr. Herbert Markowitz. From June 14, 1981, SDBC contributed a small bonsai exhibit and live demonstration to the first Japanese Friendship Garden Festival, drawing approximately 5,000 attendees. SDBC has been a member of Bonsai Clubs International (BCI) since November 1975 and an affiliate of the San Diego Floral Association since December 27, 1965. Going forward, the club is adjusting its venue arrangements in light of the March 1, 2026 introduction of paid parking at Balboa Park, expected to be phased out by January 1, 2027 under a recent city settlement.
