About Us
The Bonsai Society of the Carolinas is a non-profit organization based in Charlotte, North Carolina, dedicated to promoting the appreciation and cultivation of bonsai—the ancient art of growing miniature trees that originated in China during the Tang Dynasty and was refined in Japan. The club provides monthly educational programs and brings together enthusiasts of all levels, from beginners to advanced practitioners, united by their shared passion for this living art form.
Programs and Activities
Meetings are held on the second Saturday of each month, combining lectures with hands-on workshops where members bring their own trees (BYOT—Bring Your Own Tree) for practice and mutual guidance. The society hosts both local and nationally recognized bonsai artists at least once a year, offering programs for beginners and advanced students alike. Some programs involve a small fee. The public is always welcome to attend, and membership is not required to participate in club activities.
Membership and Community
Annual family membership is $50, covering all family members. Dues can be paid via PayPal or credit card. The club publishes a newsletter for subscribers. Leadership is provided by a volunteer board including President Joe Herrick, Vice President James Collins, Treasurer John Farrell, Editor and Secretary Gene Martin, former President/Director Gabe Steil, and Director Sam Hronesz.
Annual Schedule
Regular events in 2026 include: June Pine Maintenance Workshop (June 13), July with Tyler Sherrod (July 11), monthly meetings from August through November, and the Annual Holiday Party and Tree Swap in December. The club also collaborates with other bonsai organizations across North Carolina to promote bonsai culture throughout the region.
