Irene Website Fuchsia hobby site

首页开篇即引用约翰·济慈 1795 年写下的诗句 “A thing of beauty is a joy for ever” 作为引子,并自述该站并非商业项目。

Overview

This is a long-running personal gardening hobby site maintained by Irene under the domain ideboda.nl, online since 12 October 1999. Over more than twenty years it has accumulated fuchsia photographs, plant notes, local history pieces and original poetry.

The domain itself is borrowed from a Nelly Moser-style clematis cultivar of the same name that she bred in her own garden. The visual style is unmistakably of its time — dark-red text on yellow highlights, old-school table layouts, with a honeysuckle-leaf background image.

Fuchsia Collection and Photography

Irene’s interest in fuchsias began in 1986, when a new gardener at a nearby park in the north of the Netherlands planted several fuchsia beds. She had house plants to trade for greenhouse stock, and the swap marked the start of a serious collection.

She has continued to grow the red-and-purple fuchsia her mother once described as “difficult” ever since. By the time the site went online in 1999, more than a hundred cultivars were growing in her garden, though she does not know the names of all of them. Photography being another hobby, she recorded almost every cultivar on film and later added detail with a flatbed scanner.

Live Plant Index and Other Sections

Beyond the fuchsia pages the site hosts a “live herbarium” that lists plants from Abutilon to Zantedeschia by Latin name, family and common name, with notes on cultivation. A separate “odd plants” gallery shows twenty pages of malformations — twin bananas, conjoined tomatoes, double gerberas, doll-shaped carrots and other curiosities.

Other sections include an NL-EN / EN-NL botanical wordlist with several hundred entries, and a fuchsia-links page pointing to the Dutch Fuchsia Circle (NKvF), Just Fuchsias in Japan, Delhommeau in France, the German DDFG, Earthwork Nursery in Washington State and a number of other international fuchsia friends.

Local History and Poetry

Two sections sit slightly off the gardening topic. The first is a 1945 photo album of a Schagen farmstead in North Holland, scanned from an album made by the author’s mother (1922–1999). The second is a Tytsjerk village archive that gathers local New Year boards, neighbourhood newsreels and the village’s annual New Year’s Day swim.

The “miscellaneous” section also holds nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century “language of flowers” postcards — sixty-four pieces illustrating the traditional symbolism of rose, forget-me-not, daisy and others. The author closes with a small collection of her own poems and thoughts, accompanied by hand-drawn sketches and self-taken photos.

Contact and Maintenance Notes

The author states on the home page that the site is a hobby, not a commercial enterprise. Contact details are kept as a non-clickable mailto icon to avoid spam crawlers; an email address is therefore not displayed openly.

Since 2023 she has also been maintaining a sub-site for the Friesland regional branch of the Dutch Fuchsia Circle (NKvF Regio 1). The site is still in active maintenance, with the most recent update in April 2024 adding three new fuchsia cultivar pages.
