协会概况与历史沿革
加拿大渥太华山谷岩石园和园艺协会（Ottawa Valley Rock Garden & Horticultural Society，下文简称 OVRGHS）是一个立足加拿大安大略省渥太华市的非营利性岩石园爱好者团体，于 1992 年 11 月由当地一小组岩石园和多年生植物爱好者发起成立，协会名字定稿以来便一直以”在非营利基础上推广和支持岩石园栽培”为办会宗旨。OVRGHS 同时是北美岩石园协会（North American Rock Garden Society，下文简称 NARGS）的正式分会，也是安大略园艺协会（Ontario Horticultural Association，下文简称 OHA）District 2 的成员团体，因此它在加拿大东部岩石园爱好者网络里扮演本地化的活跃节点。协会的常态活动地点设在渥太华南部的圣马可圣公会教堂（圣马可圣公会教堂，渥太华南区主要聚会点），多数月度活动也安排在这里的副堂或会议室举行。
会员资格与月度会议
OVRGHS 的会籍年度从每年 9 月 1 日延续到次年 8 月 31 日，个人会员年费为 20 加元，家庭会员年费为 25 加元，新成员可从协会公开页面下载 PDF 或 Microsoft Word 版本的入会表格，填写后按指示连同支票、e-Transfer 提交给财务即可完成注册。除常规会籍外，协会明确把月度会议列为会员专享活动，会员还可以借阅协会小型图书室的岩石园专题藏书、收到月度电子简报、并参加只在渥太华地区组织的野外考察与工作坊。OVRGHS 的正式月度会议通常在 9 月到次年 5 月期间每月第二个星期六召开，下午 12:45 开放入场、1:30 正式开始通知环节，单次会议时长约为一个半小时；近年会议采取线下加 Zoom 同步混合形式，未能到场的会员可通过邮件提前获取远程会议链接。
年度种子交换 SeedEx
种子交换是 OVRGHS 一年中最具标志性的核心活动，也是它跟母会 NARGS 之间最直接的合作纽带。协会每年 11 月 8 日前接受会员提交的种子清单与种子实物，11 月 9 日之后提交的种子会被列入稍晚发布的补充名单；12 月 1 日协会向全体会员电邮发布完整的可用种子清单，会员可于 12 月 15 日前通过专用表格提交索取请求；次年 1 月 10 日下午 12 点半，志愿者会聚集在圣马可教堂一起按会员请求把种子分装到小玻璃纸袋中并当场或随后分发。每份种子收取 5 加元现金，也可通过 e-Transfer 或支票支付；分拣日当天未被任何会员认领的剩余种子则会按会员价在现场售卖。这套年度循环源自 NARGS 北方各家分会多年沿用的种子交换传统，OVRGHS 既分享母会通过 NARGS Seed Exchange 收集到的稀有高山植物种子，也把自己会员捐赠的种子上交给 NARGS 主清单。
植物销售与季节性园艺活动
在春季与初夏阶段，OVRGHS 还会组织一系列跟岩石园栽培密切相关的季节性活动，其中规模和影响最大的是春末的协会植物销售（Plant Sale）以及会员专享的报销计划：会员在指定合作园艺商处购买岩石园和高山植物时可以凭发票申请单株 50% 的费用报销，每位会员每年最多可报销 75 加元。同期协会还会组织一位会员开放花园的访园日（Open Gardens），以及 Trough Workshop 之类的深度工作坊，参与者在 Judy Wall 等资深会员的指导下亲手制作小型石槽盆栽（Trough）并带回家。OVRGHS 每年还会以参与方而非主办方的身份参加由 Just Food 在 Emmanuel United Church 举办的 Ottawa Seedy Saturday 种子集市，与会者现场即可见到 OVRGHS 与 NARGS 双源种子交换的实物。

Society Profile & Founding
The Ottawa Valley Rock Garden & Horticultural Society (OVRGHS) is a non-profit society of rock garden and alpine plant enthusiasts based in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Founded in November 1992 by a small group of local rock gardeners and perennial plant growers, OVRGHS has long operated under the stated purpose of promoting and supporting rock gardening on a non-profit basis. The society is registered as a chapter of the North American Rock Garden Society (NARGS) and is also a member society of the Ontario Horticultural Association (OHA) District 2, with the majority of its monthly activities held at St. Mark’s Anglican Church in southern Ottawa.
Membership & Monthly Meetings
The membership year of OVRGHS runs from September 1 to August 31 each year. Annual dues are set at CAD 20 for an individual member and CAD 25 for a family membership; new applicants can download a PDF or Microsoft Word membership form from the public site and submit it to the treasurer together with the payment. Beyond access to the seed exchange and the society library, members receive the monthly electronic newsletter and have first priority on field trips and workshops that take place within the Ottawa region. Regular meetings are typically scheduled on the second Saturday of each month from September through May, with doors opening at 12:45 pm, announcements starting at 1:30 pm, and each session running for roughly an hour and a half; in recent years meetings have been offered in a hybrid format combining in-person attendance at St. Mark’s Anglican Church with Zoom streaming that members can join by request.
Annual Seed Exchange SeedEx
The seed exchange, known internally as SeedEx, is the most distinctive annual undertaking of OVRGHS and the most direct operational link with the parent NARGS seed exchange. Each year, members may submit seeds and a completed seed-donation list on or before November 8, with later donations still included on a follow-up list published after that date. On December 1 the full list of available seeds is e-mailed out to every member, requests are accepted through mid-December via the seed-request form, and on January 10 a Seed Sorting Day is held at St. Mark’s Church beginning at 12:30 pm, when volunteers sort the requested seeds into small glassine envelopes and hand the packets out on the day or shortly afterward. A flat CAD 5 fee applies for each batch of seeds received, payable in cash, by e-Transfer or by cheque; leftover unclaimed seeds are also offered to members on-site at the sorting day. Through this annual cycle OVRGHS both distributes seeds gathered via the NARGS seed exchange and submits member-grown seeds back to the NARGS master list.
Plant Sale & Seasonal Activities
In the spring and early summer months OVRGHS hosts a coordinated set of seasonal activities tied to its rock garden focus. The headliner is the spring Plant Sale together with the member reimbursement program: members buying rock garden and alpine plants from designated partner nurseries can claim a 50% reimbursement on each plant purchased, capped at CAD 75 per member per year. Open Gardens days invite visitors into the gardens of one or two OVRGHS members, while hands-on workshops such as the Trough Workshop, hosted at the home of experienced members such as Judy Wall, walk participants through building small container trough gardens that they take home. The society also takes part as a contributor rather than organizer in the Ottawa Seedy Saturday seed fair organized by Just Food at Emmanuel United Church, where seeds from both the OVRGHS SeedEx and the NARGS Seed Exchange are made visible to the wider Ottawa gardening public.
Networks, Publications & Public Resources
OVRGHS maintains its standing in the wider Canadian and North American rock gardening community through two parallel channels. The first runs vertically through NARGS and OHA District 2, linking local members to the rare alpines offered via the NARGS Seed Exchange and to the printed and electronic publications of the parent societies. The second is the society-run monthly OVRGHS Newsletter, with a copy deadline that sits roughly three weeks ahead of each meeting; its pages record upcoming events, members’ cultivation successes, and practical articles on growing alpines and other perennials, and the editorial policy explicitly encourages other rock garden society newsletters to reprint articles with appropriate attribution. In addition, the society maintains a small lending library of rock garden reference books for member use and posts meeting Zoom details together with recordings of recent sessions on its public-facing pages for new and prospective members.
