Project Background and Co-Publishers
Pacific Northwest Pest Management Handbooks is a tri-state Extension publication produced cooperatively by Oregon State University, Washington State University and University of Idaho. It integrates three formerly print-only handbooks into one searchable database: the PNW Insect Management Handbook, the PNW Plant Disease Management Handbook, and the PNW Weed Management Handbook. The site covers agronomic, horticultural, nut, small fruit, tree fruit, vegetable, landscape, nursery, greenhouse, turfgrass and livestock systems across Idaho, Oregon and Washington, with additional sections on bee protection, pollinator protection, pesticide safety, container disposal, and regulatory authorities.
Coverage by Crop and Pest Type
Each handbook is organised by crop category. Top-level chapters include Agronomic Crops (wheat, corn, canola, mint, sugar beet, sunflower, hemp), Nut Crops (chestnut, hazelnut, walnut), Small Fruit Crops (blueberry, blackberry, raspberry, cranberry, grape, strawberry), Tree Fruit Crops (apple, cherry, peach, pear, plum), Vegetable Crops (potato, mushroom, cabbage, carrot, sweet corn), Horticultural, Landscape, and Ornamental Crops (Christmas trees, nursery, greenhouse, landscape, turfgrass), Livestock (cattle, horse, sheep, swine, poultry) and Bee Protection. Intended Audience and Editorial Scope
The handbooks are written expressly for county extension agents, agricultural consultants, field and nursery staff, chemical industry representatives and commercial growers. Recent revisions have added sections aimed at Master Gardeners and homeowners, while keeping commercial pesticide recommendations separate so that restricted-use products stay with licensed applicators. All three handbooks stress that specific recommendations should be made by a qualified individual, that organic growers should focus on cultural and biological control, and that organic-allowed compounds are marked with O, corresponding to Subpart G 205.601 of the National Organic Standards.
Revision Cycle and Editorial Team
Each handbook is revised and reissued annually. Web pages show revision dates, and the database version includes colour photographs and external links beyond what fits in the printed books. The 2026 PNW Insect Management Handbook editor is Navneet Kaur; the Weed Handbook editor is Aaron Becerra-Alvarez. Authors draw on research from the Agricultural Experiment Stations and Extension Services of Oregon, Idaho and Washington, plus other U.S. Department of Agriculture research centres, and make every effort to ensure information conforms to current product labels and company recommendations.
Compliance, Safety and Emergency Use
The handbooks stress that pesticide labels change frequently: crops or sites may be de-listed, new formulations may require new application rates, and pre-harvest intervals and re-entry periods may shift. Each handbook carries a General Notice of Pesticide Information and lists emergency contact information in the site footer. The copyright line for Oregon State University appears at the bottom of every page, along with general disclaimer and privacy links. Any pesticide use contrary to the printed label is neither legal nor recommended.
