PREP 的核心业务是按华盛顿州农业部(WSDA)规定为农药施药员提供 Pre-License(领证前培训)和 Recertification(再认证培训)。 课程目录包括 Pest Control Operator(PCO)通用课、农业航空施药员手册,以及面向 WSDA 新颁 C&T(Certification and Training)规则的过渡课程。

Christina Mercado 负责的 PICOL(Pesticide Information Center Online)数据库收录州内登记农药的产品标签、限制使用农药名单与施药员纪律记录,供合规查询。

Affiliation and Mission

The Washington State University Pesticide Resources and Education Program (PREP) sits inside WSU’s College of Agricultural, Human, and Natural Resource Sciences (CAHNRS), with offices in Pullman, WA 99164-5912. The program was set up in the mid-1970s as a joint effort between the state government and WSU to train pesticide applicators; over time it grew into a university-wide hub for pesticide licensing and Integrated Pest Management (IPM) reference material covering home gardens, indoor pests, structural pests, and K-12 school grounds.

Licensing and Recertification Courses

PREP delivers Pre-License and Recertification training required by the Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) for pesticide applicators. Courses are offered in person, online, and via webinar, with English as the primary language and Spanish support handled by specialists such as Micaela Proano. The catalog includes Pest Control Operator (PCO) general courses, the National Aerial Applicator Manual for aerial pest control, and a set of C&T (Certification and Training) transition courses aligned with WSDA’s recent regulatory changes.

Hortsense, Pestsense, and School IPM

For home gardeners, PREP maintains Hortsense (hortsense.cahnrs.wsu.edu), a fact-sheet library indexed by both plant and pest, with side-by-side notes on chemical, biological, and cultural controls. Pestsense (pestsense.cahnrs.wsu.edu) covers indoor pests in homes and public buildings. The School IPM site (schoolipm.wsu.edu), led by Brittny Jones, supplies K-12 schools and districts with IPM implementation guides, greenhouse IPM curricula for teachers, pest-prevention landscaping templates, and tracking of Washington State school pest management statutes.

Structural Pest IPM and WSPCB Collaboration

For the professional pest control operator (PCO) trade, PREP runs Structural Pest IPM (structuralpest.wsu.edu) in collaboration with the Washington State Pest Control Board, publishing non-chemical-first treatment plans for termites, drywood beetles, bed bugs, and urban rodents. Christina Mercado maintains PICOL (Pesticide Information Center Online), which lists product labels for registered state pesticides, restricted-use materials, and applicator disciplinary records for compliance look-ups.

Team, Publications, and Outreach

PREP has roughly a dozen permanent faculty and extension staff. Director Wendy Wheeler also serves as Assistant Professor; Javier Gutierrez Illan is the Associate Director and Assistant Professor. Publications go through review by Adrienne Burke and Kristi Boone before being distributed free of charge through the WSU Extension channel. Outreach resources include an IPM video series on plant problem diagnosis, European chafer, pruning as an IPM tool, and pollinator protection, plus WPS (Worker Protection Standard) compliance manuals and EPA posters for agricultural workers.
