机构沿革

History & Background
Perth and Kinross Countryside Trust (PKCT) is a Scottish registered charity, founded in 1997 and operating across the whole of Perth and Kinross. It is registered with the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator (OSCR) under charity number SC027481 and is constituted as a company limited by guarantee. The Trust is an independent organisation supported by its core funders, The Gannochy Trust and Perth & Kinross Council, and works with Scottish Forestry, Forestry and Land Scotland, NatureScot, Sustrans and the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh. The registered office is in Perth. In April 2022 the Trust secured three years of renewed core funding from The Gannochy Trust at an increased level of core funding. In 2021 the Trust marked its 25th anniversary, launched the Friends of PKCT regular-giving scheme and appointed the outdoor writer Cameron McNeish as its first Patron. The Board is made up of 11 Trustees, chaired by Cedric Wilkins.
Mission & Core Activities
PKCT negotiates access to land, builds and improves paths, helps care for some of Scotland’s most spectacular woodlands and trees, and runs conservation and education projects that improve and promote access to the countryside for walkers, cyclists and horse riders. The Trust’s purpose is to encourage people to learn about the natural, historical and cultural heritage of Perthshire and to find ways to protect and care for the countryside for current and future generations. Day-to-day the Trust combines path-building work with public interpretation, school engagement and volunteer-led monitoring. Its main programme brands are Perthshire Big Tree Country, the Perthshire Conifer Conservation Programme (PCCP), the Cateran Trail, the National Tree Collections of Scotland (NTCS) network and, more recently, the Perthshire Nature Connections Partnership (PNCP), which was renamed NCP – P&K in May 2025 and joined the Climate Connect Perth and Kinross collective.
Major Projects
Perthshire Big Tree Country brings together 18 of the best trees and woodlands in Perthshire, grouped into seven areas: Aberfeldy, Blair Atholl, Crieff and Strathearn, Dunkeld and Birnam, Perth and Scone, Highland Perthshire and Loch Leven. Standout sites include the Birks of Aberfeldy, Cluny House Gardens, the Birnam Oak, The Hermitage and Kinnoull Hill Woodland Park. The Cateran Trail is one of Scotland’s Great Trails: a fully waymarked 64-mile (103 km) circular route through Perthshire and the Angus glens, divided into five walkable stages. The Trail follows old drove roads and ancient tracks once used by the Caterans, fearsome cattle raiders who ranged across Strathardle, Glenshee and Glen Isla from the Middle Ages to the 17th century. PKCT manages the route in partnership with landowners and, in 2024, the Cateran Yomp fundraiser raised substantial sums for the Army Benevolent Fund. The Perthshire Conifer Conservation Programme collects seed in native range countries and grows seedlings on as safe refuges in Perthshire’s forests, gardens and estates, restoring Victorian-era designed conifer landscapes and safeguarding some of the world’s most threatened conifer species. NTCS links Scotland’s finest specimen tree collections and works to raise public awareness of this national tree heritage.

PKCT’s core funders are The Gannochy Trust, Perth & Kinross Council and Scottish Forestry. Its long-term partners include Forestry and Land Scotland, NatureScot, Sustrans and the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh. Perthshire Nature Connections Partnership is funded by PKCT together with six stakeholders: Perth & Kinross Council, Scottish Forestry, Forestry and Land Scotland, NatureScot, the Cairngorms National Park Authority and Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park. Since 1997 PKCT has helped establish community path networks with Perth & Kinross Council and local communities across Aberfeldy, Auchterarder, Blairgowrie, Carse of Gowrie, Coupar Angus, Crieff, Dunkeld, Kinloch Rannoch, Kirkmichael, Pitlochry and the Loch Leven Heritage Trail.
Organisation & Annual Reports
The staff team is made up of a CEO (Graham McQueen) and five Programme Officers covering communities, strategic routes, conservation and projects, and discovery, learning and engagement. The Board has 11 Trustees and is chaired by Cedric Wilkins. Cameron McNeish was appointed the Trust’s first Patron in July 2021. The Friends of PKCT regular-giving scheme was launched in 2021 to mark the Trust’s 25th anniversary, and Annual Reports and a regular Newsletter are published on the Trust’s website for supporters and the wider public. Accounts are filed annually with OSCR.
