昆虫鉴定与无毒植物协作

Mission and Institutional Roots

The OSU Plant Clinic operates within the College of Agricultural Sciences at Oregon State University, housed in the Department of Botany and Plant Pathology. Founded in 1954 on the Corvallis campus, the Clinic functions as part of the Cooperative Extension Service. Its central mission is education: helping clients understand the nature of their plant problems and guiding them toward cultural, biological, or chemical management strategies, with a strong emphasis on prevention. The Clinic is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and closes on all University observed holidays. Home gardeners are encouraged to consult their county OSU Extension office for free advice before submitting samples to the Clinic.

Diagnostic Services and Workflow

The Plant Clinic is a fee-based diagnostic facility that offers plant disease problem solving and specialized identification. Routine plant disease diagnosis includes microscopic examination, moist chamber tests, isolations on artificial nutrient media, and identification of fungi and bacteria to genus. Viruses are diagnosed through serology or electron microscopy. Soil pH and total soluble salts are measured when needed, and management recommendations accompany every report. Turnaround time for molecular or culturing tests is typically two weeks, depending on the problem and sample load. The Clinic no longer offers nematode testing; turf diagnostics are handled by the OSU Turf Diagnostics Lab, and chemical or nutrient analyses are referred to the OSU Soil Health Lab.

Insect ID Clinic and Clean Plant Center

The Plant Clinic also houses the OSU Insect ID Clinic, a free insect and spider identification service open to the public, with samples dropped off at Cordley Hall. For specimens that cannot be identified by morphology alone, the lab sequences the mitochondrial COI barcode gene and compares results against public DNA databases (GenBank and BOLD), charging 128 dollars for samples from Oregon and 189 dollars for samples from outside the state. In partnership with the USDA-ARS Horticultural Crops Disease and Pest Management Research Unit, the Clinic also operates the Oregon Clean Plant Center as part of the National Clean Plant Network, providing pathogen testing for Vaccinium, Rubus, and Fragaria breeders using qPCR, PCR, ELISA, and grafting techniques.

Public Outreach and Community Education

The Clinic maintains an ongoing collaboration with the PNW Plant Disease Management Handbook, co-publishing revised chapters on plant disease and pest management for growers and extension agents across the Pacific Northwest. It also issues public alerts on invasive pests, including the emerald ash borer, encouraging residents to report dying or stressed ash trees along with identification notes. During weekday business hours, Cordley Hall welcomes home gardeners, growers, and staff from state and federal agencies who bring samples or seek guidance, with detailed arrangements described through the Clinic’s public contact page and the triage protocols of the local OSU Extension office.
