Overview

BBC Gardeners’ World Magazine is a monthly British gardening magazine launched in 1991 under the BBC brand. It carries practical gardening advice, plant recommendations and garden tours, and serves as the print companion to the long-running BBC television series Gardeners’ World. Long-time contributors include Monty Don, Frances Tophill, Arit Anderson, Adam Frost and Carol Klein, and the title has been the United Kingdom’s best-selling gardening monthly for more than thirty years.

History

The magazine was launched in 1991 alongside the BBC’s flagship gardening television series and was originally published by the BBC’s own publishing division. In 2011 the BBC withdrew from print publishing and sold the title, along with several other magazines, to Immediate Media Company. Since then the magazine has been published under BBC brand licence by Immediate Media, while the BBC retains the use of the BBC name and the Gardeners’ World wordmark in a long-running co-branded arrangement.

The companion BBC Gardeners’ World Live consumer show was founded in 1992 as a joint venture between the BBC and the magazine team. The event has been organised by River Street Events, and Immediate Media moved to a controlling stake in that organiser in 2019 and acquired full ownership a few years later; the show continues to operate under the BBC Gardeners’ World brand.

Status and Operations

The magazine is now published by Immediate Media Company, headquartered in Bristol, United Kingdom, under licence from the BBC. According to the publisher’s most recent audience figures (first half of 2025), the brand reaches about 2.5 million digital users each month, around 890,000 monthly print readers, roughly 1.8 million social-media followers in aggregate, and about 236,000 monthly podcast listeners, keeping it among the most widely read gardening titles in the United Kingdom. Subscriptions are sold directly and through newsagents in the United Kingdom and Ireland.

The associated site gardenersworld.com was launched in 2007 and now carries daily gardening news, plant finder content, a reader Q&A, product reviews and a paid Premium membership tier. BBC Gardeners’ World Live runs annually in summer in the United Kingdom and is one of the country’s largest consumer gardening shows.

Content and Sections

The magazine is organised around the British gardening calendar, with monthly task lists, vegetable and fruit growing guides, planting combinations, garden tours and reader letters. Contributors from the BBC television series write regular columns, often based on their own private gardens. The website carries long-running sections on what to do now, plant recommendations, garden design case studies and gardening Q&A. The Premium subscription tier offers longer features, video collections, exclusive plant offers and subscriber-only competitions.
