About the Society
The International Hepatica Society (IHSJ) is a Japanese society for Hepatica enthusiasts founded on 3 September 2000 in Niigata Prefecture, with its base near the Echigo Hillside National Government Park. Members include hobbyists, breeders, and researchers. Its stated purpose is to consolidate knowledge on Hepatica conservation and cultivation and to share the Japanese tradition with enthusiasts abroad.
Founding and Declaration
On 10 March 2001 the society issued the IHSJ 2001 Declaration, embedding nature conservation in its charter: members recognise that this small flower can bring awareness of natural richness and a duty to pass such an environment to future generations. A list of founding members was published in the same year, recording the individuals and groups that helped establish the society and serving as part of the founding record.
Hepatica and Its Study
Hepatica is an early-spring wildflower of the buttercup family. Japan (excluding Hokkaido) is home to four native species, while the large-leaved O-misumi-sō (H. nobilis var. japonica) from the Niigata coast shows wide variation in flower form and colour and has long attracted international breeders. Dedicated pages introduce Japanese and world Hepatica, with horticultural classification and basic breeding terms; members also contribute cultivation and seedling-raising notes, with photographs courtesy of the Niigata Prefectural Botanical Garden.
The Journal Yukigeshige
The society has published its annual journal Yukigeshige every September since the early 2000s. Issues No.2 through No.23 are currently available for purchase (No.1 and No.5 are sold out), and non-members can order through the office. Members may also join a free e-mail club that circulates seasonal observations, plant discussions and reader questions.
Organisation and Events
Office contacts, officers, statutes, and annual plans are published on the site. The membership year runs January to December, with annual fees paid by the end of March. Each spring the society posts updates on Hepatica flowering conditions, participates in the Yukigeshige Festival at venues such as the Echigo Hillside Park, and shares field observations from natural habitats and breeders.
