协会概况与历史沿革
国际睡莲和水花园协会(The International Waterlily & Water Gardening Society,简称 IWGS)是一个跨国非营利会员组织,1984 年由水生植物爱好者、育种者、植物园工作者共同发起,目前办公地点设在美国弗吉尼亚州。协会的宗旨是推动水生植物学、水景园艺学、睡莲科与莲科育种学的国际交流,支持教育、科研和保护四个方向。
组织宗旨与四大工作方向
协会围绕水景花园及其相关水生植物开展活动,具体工作包括:支持会员在水生植物栽培与育种方面的实践,推动植物园之间在水景园建设与品种收集上的合作,鼓励业余爱好者与专业育种者之间的对话。协会不直接经营苗圃或销售植物,而是以中立学术平台身份协调国际资源。
睡莲科与莲科国际品种登记
协会被国际园艺学会指定为睡莲科(Nymphaea)和莲科(Nelumbo)新品种的国际登记机构,负责维护全球范围内睡莲与莲花新品种的命名档案。品种登记是育种者权益保护的国际惯例,登记档案为协会《水花园杂志》季刊及植物园品种目录提供权威引用基础。
学术期刊、研讨会与年度竞赛
协会出版《水花园杂志》(Water Garden Journal)季刊,自 1986 年起持续发行,刊载水生植物研究论文、品种报告与保护案例。协会自 1990 年代起定期举办国际研讨会,历届地点包括 2007 年泰国研讨会、2008 年美国弗吉尼亚州研讨会(在 Sarah P. Duke Gardens 进行睡莲新品种田间栽培评估)等。
年度荣誉与会员体系
协会设有年度名册(Annual Hall of Fame),表彰在水生植物研究与保护领域有长期贡献的个人,2024 年度入选者 Carlos Magdalena 因其在濒危水生植物拯救方面的实践获得提名。会员体系分为个人会员、商业会员、植物园会员、附属学会会员四档,商业与植物园会员名录公开列于协会年报,2022 年协会参与英国皇家园艺学会 Award of Garden Merit 评选,介绍 2022 年度获奖品种。
About IWGS and Its Founding
The International Waterlily & Water Gardening Society (IWGS) is a multinational non-profit membership organization founded in 1984 by water gardeners, hybridizers, and botanical garden professionals. The Society operates an office in Virginia, USA. Its mission is to advance all aspects of water gardens and their associated aquatic plants, supporting education, research, and conservation across the four working directions.
Mission and Four Working Directions
IWGS works on all aspects of water gardens and associated aquatic plants. The four directions include practice by members in aquatic plant cultivation and hybridizing, collaboration among botanical gardens on water garden construction and variety collection, dialogue between amateur enthusiasts and professional hybridizers, and conservation of threatened aquatic habitats. The Society does not run nurseries or sell plants directly, but operates as a neutral academic platform coordinating international resources.
International Registration Authority for Nymphaea and Nelumbo
The Society has been designated by the International Society for Horticultural Science as the International Registration Authority for the genera Nymphaea (waterlilies) and Nelumbo (lotus), responsible for maintaining the global archive of new cultivar names. The registration system supports hybridizer rights and provides authoritative references for the Water Garden Journal and botanical garden variety catalogues.
Quarterly Journal, Symposium and Annual Competition
IWGS publishes the Water Garden Journal as a quarterly periodical, issued continuously since 1986, carrying research papers, variety reports, and conservation case studies on aquatic plants. The Society has organized international symposia since the 1990s, including the 2007 Thailand Symposium and the 2008 Virginia USA Symposium at the Sarah P. Duke Gardens where new waterlily hybrids were evaluated in field trials.
Annual Honors and Membership Tiers
The Society maintains an Annual Hall of Fame honoring individuals with sustained contributions to aquatic plant research and conservation; the 2024 inductee Carlos Magdalena was recognized for his practical work in rescuing highly endangered species. Membership tiers include individual, commercial, botanic garden, and affiliate society members, with commercial and garden member rosters published in annual reports. In 2022 the Society contributed to the UK Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit review covering that year’s recommended aquatic varieties.
