Mandate and Establishment
The National Engineering Research Center for Floriculture (NERCF) was approved by China’s Ministry of Science and Technology in January 2005. It is hosted by Beijing Forestry University and is the only national-level engineering research platform in floriculture. NERCF is anchored on the National Key Discipline of Landscape Plants and Ornamental Horticulture. Its in-house facilities include an engineering laboratory, the Ministry of Education’s Research Center for Landscape and Environmental Engineering, Beijing Forestry University’s Forestry Technology Co., Ltd., a Famous Flowers Research Office and the China Center for Ikebana and Floral Art. Sixteen regional R&D and extension centres spread across the country make up the rest of the network.
Five Research Directions
NERCF organises its engineering research and industry outreach around five directions: flower genetic resources and germplasm innovation, breeding of new flower varieties, modern flower production, post-harvest preservation and transport, and flower use in human habitats. Recent work covers the full chain. In germplasm, the centre led the assembly of the crape myrtle genome and built a dedicated sub-site on Prunus mume genome research. In breeding, teams working on crape myrtle, Prunus mume, rose and Primula have released new cultivars and hybrid combinations. In modern production and post-harvest handling, the centre links cut-flower treatments, storage and protected cultivation. On the application and translation side, two national standards led by NERCF were released in 2024 and two group standards in 2022.
Research Team and Backbone
The centre is led by an engineering-oriented team with academician-level guidance and a backbone of national and ministerial-level discipline leaders, and has built up a flower research community with national and international impact. Long-running principal investigators include Professor Zhang Qixiang’s group on Prunus mume, crape myrtle and rose breeding and Professor Pan Huitang’s group on inter-sectional hybridisation in Primula, both of whom also supervise graduate students. The centre draws on the National Key Discipline of Landscape Plants and Ornamental Horticulture and shares laboratory infrastructure across molecular biology, tissue culture and genetic transformation, plant physiology and biochemistry, and greenhouse and germplasm nurseries, with Beijing Forestry University providing cross-disciplinary support from forestry, landscape architecture and biology.
R&D and Extension Network
NERCF has set up sixteen regional R&D and extension centres across China’s main flower production areas, covering North China, East China, South China, Southwest China and Northeast China. Each centre takes responsibility for research, demonstration and extension work on flowers with regional characteristics. The centre is a member body of the Chinese Society for Horticultural Science, the China Flower Association and the Chinese Forestry Education Society, and has long been involved in organising the China Ornamental Horticulture Academic Conference. The dedicated Prunus mume Genome sub-site at prunusmumegenome.bjfu.edu.cn is one of the centre’s main public-facing digital resources.
Recent Research Highlights
In 2022 the centre released two group standards. In 2023 its rose breeding team received a Beijing Municipal Science and Technology Progress Award, and the crape myrtle breeding team completed the crape myrtle genome assembly and population variation study. 2024 was the centre’s most productive year. The crape myrtle team published a high-quality chromosome-level genome of Lagerstroemia speciosa, the Prunus mume team reported progress on anthocyanin accumulation in plum blossom and on GAox genes in Prunus, the centre’s cold-tolerant Prunus mume group standard was recognised by a 2024 Beijing municipal award, and the centre’s two national standards were released. The centre also participated in spaceflight breeding work on the SJ-19 returnable test satellite. Regular activities include instrument and academic lectures on topics such as the LI-6400XT photosynthesis system, UAV remote sensing, China-US ornamental horticulture comparisons, and the regulation of plant branch angle.
