About the Group

The International Geraniaceae Group (IGG) is a worldwide organisation for enthusiasts of plants in the family Geraniaceae, currently administered from the United Kingdom. It began publishing its newsletter in 1981 as a small exchange platform for Geraniaceae hobbyists. At a Committee meeting on 4 November 2017, members voted to rename the Group to the International Geraniaceae Group to reflect the growing number of international members. The Group is registered as a not-for-profit unincorporated association under UK law.

Aims and Activities

IGG covers the entire family Geraniaceae, including the genera Geranium, Erodium, Pelargonium, Monsonia and Sarcocaulon, together with their primary inter-species hybrids. Activities centre on meetings and visits among members, the IGG Facebook Group, the website forum, and members’ contributions to the newsletter and the website, with topics ranging from wild habitat observations and cultivation notes to breeding experiments.

Newsletter and Seed Exchange

The IGG Newsletter is the main vehicle for members to exchange information. It appears quarterly, with issue 181 (Summer 2026) being the most recent, and has been online-only since Spring 2019. The annual Seed Exchange is coordinated by the Seed Exchange Manager; seeds for the 2026 list are due by 30 September. The IGG Reference Collection, jointly maintained by four curators, holds around 1000 well-documented collection items, ensuring rare species remain in cultivation.

Membership and Committee

Membership costs £12 per calendar year, regardless of country, and is payable through PayPal using the address listed on the website Join us page. Members receive four quarterly newsletters, access to the annual Seed Exchange list, the IGG Digital Library (digitised books, theses and IGG species check-lists), the archive of past newsletters dating back to 1981, the members-only forum, and cultivar registration resources. The Committee consists of four members: a Chairman, a Membership Secretary, a Seed Exchange Manager, and a Cultivar Registrar.

Plant Resources

IGG hosts the International Cultivar Registrar for Geranium and Erodium, who registers cultivar names for those two genera under the International Code of Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants (ICNCP); registration is free of charge. The website Gallery displays members’ photographs of species and hybrids across the five genera (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0). The Links section also lists sister sites in German, Dutch, Russian, Czech and French, plus several national Pelargonium and Geranium societies in Europe and the United States.
