Founded in 1978, the nursery has accumulated more than four decades of experience in orchid cultivation, breeding and supply, and is widely recognised by European hobbyists and advanced collectors as a benchmark source for species and hybrid orchids.

The nursery specialises in two plant groups — orchids and Tillandsia air plants — and maintains a year-round stock of more than 350 orchid species and hybrids across genera such as Cattleya, Dendrobium, Phalaenopsis, Paphiopedilum, Oncidium, Vanda, Bulbophyllum, Masdevallia and many more. Brand history and company heritage

The Akerne Orchids brand traces its roots to 1978, when the founders began cultivating orchids in the Antwerp area. Over the following four decades the nursery evolved from a small family operation into a fully-fledged orchid supplier serving European retail hobbyists, advanced collectors and wholesale customers. The trading name “Akerne Orchids” is used commercially, while the legal entity is registered as Orchid Web bv. Both the company office and the production nursery are co-located on the same site, allowing a tight integration between the online webshop and the on-site greenhouses.

Greenhouses and the annual Open Nursery Weekend

The production site sits at Laarsebeekdreef 4, 2900 Schoten, Belgium, in the north-eastern suburbs of Antwerp. Beyond the commercial greenhouses, the nursery operates a dedicated cool-growing section that houses its private breeding and mother-plant collection — an uncommon feature for a commercial orchid nursery in the region. Once a year the nursery opens its doors to the public during the Open Nursery Weekend, offering guided tours, expert advice, on-site sales with a 15% direct Open Nursery discount, and a behind-the-scenes look at the cool-growing private collection. Online ordering and European shipping

The official website akerne-orchids.com runs on the PrestaShop e-commerce platform and is available in four languages: English, French, German and Dutch. Orders are accepted via the webshop, by e-mail or by post, and are shipped by courier to Belgium and all other EU member states; shipments outside the EU are not offered. To protect plants during cold months, shipping is weather-permitting from November through March.
