Montgomery Botanical Center

Montgomery 是 Lybrand, Ross Bros.

Estate Origins and Founder Family

Montgomery Botanical Center occupies a 120-acre family estate in Coral Gables, Florida, with roots going back to 1932, when Col. Robert H. Montgomery built the first palm collection in what he named the Coconut Grove Palmetum. A founding partner of the accounting firm Lybrand, Ross Bros. & Montgomery (now PricewaterhouseCoopers) and the author of more than 40 books on accounting and tax law, Montgomery retired to South Florida to pursue tropical botany. In 1936 he joined the plant explorer David Fairchild in founding Fairchild Tropical Garden on the neighboring tract.

Founding and Institutional Evolution

Robert Montgomery died at home on May 2, 1953, leaving his wife Eleanor “Nell” Montgomery Jennings to inherit an estate already holding 432 palm species, 50 cycad species, and more than a thousand other documented plants. On November 20, 1959, Nell created The Montgomery Foundation, Inc. as a private nonprofit operating institution devoted to advancing the science of tropical botany through research-oriented plant collections. In 1998 the foundation adopted its present name, Montgomery Botanical Center (MBC).

Palm Collections and Scientific Expeditions

MBC houses one of the world’s largest living palm research collections. Beginning in 1932, Montgomery acquired palms and other tropical plants through contacts such as Tom Fennell of the USDA Plant Introduction Station at Chapman Field; by the end of 1933 he had planted 237 palm species (over 1,000 mature specimens). After Nell’s death in 1990, MBC launched a sustained program of wild-collected expeditions. Between 1992 and 2001 the center ran 41 expeditions that added 370-plus palm taxa and more than 2,500 specimens. The 1992 master plan by Sasaki Associates divided the property into four geographic areas: the Coconut Grove Palmetum, the South Palmetum, the Lowland Palmetum, and Research.

Cycad Conservation and the IUCN Program Office

Often called “living fossils,” cycads are the focus of MBC’s conservation work. MBC serves as the official Program Office of the IUCN/SSC Cycad Specialist Group and maintains the World List of Cycads, the consensus taxonomy of living cycad species (around 300 species in ten genera). MBC also partners with Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden to operate an eight-acre nursery on the property, and hosts the offices of the American Orchid Society, supporting palm, cycad, and orchid research side by side.

Education, Recognition, and Public Engagement

MBC shares its science through workshops, lectures, publications, and guided tours for researchers, horticulturists, and the public. In 2012 the American Society for Horticultural Science designated MBC a Horticultural Landmark in recognition of its contributions to tropical plant conservation and garden design. The Champion Trees program documents the most notable specimen trees on the property, and together with neighboring Fairchild Tropical Garden the estate forms one of South Florida’s most important living plant collections.
