BYLAWS OF THE TROPICAL FERN & EXOTIC PLANT SOCIETY, INC. (Individual / Household / Life / Life Household / Honorary)、董事会选举流程、年度财务审计程序等条款, 任何有意入会的个人都可以在入会前查阅.

Founding and Organizational Form

The Tropical Fern & Exotic Plant Society (TFEPS) is a Miami-Dade County based association for hobbyists and scholars who share an interest in tropical ferns and exotic plants. It was incorporated in the State of Florida as a Domestic Non Profit Corporation on September 1, 1999, and has since been recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as a tax-exempt organization under section 501(c)(7). The society welcomes individual growers working with ferns, begonias, orchids, aroids, palms and other tropical groups, and is open to anyone who would like to learn more about subtropical horticulture in South Florida. Its articles and bylaws follow the Florida Not For Profit Corporation Act, the registered office is located in Miami-Dade County, and day-to-day operations are carried out entirely by volunteers.

Monthly Meetings and Speaker Program

The society’s flagship activity is its monthly meeting, which takes place on the fourth Monday of every month except December. Meetings are held in Corbin Classroom A at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden in Coral Gables, with refreshments and a raffle table set up at 7:15 pm and the formal presentation beginning at 7:30 pm. Speakers are typically local horticulturalists, botanists and experienced growers who address topics such as cultivation and propagation techniques, landscape design with tropical species, and conservation of rare plants. The meetings are free and open to the public. A members-only plant sales table is set up at each meeting, allowing members to exchange or sell plants they have propagated at home.

Membership and Annual Auction

The society offers annual and lifetime membership options for individuals and households. Standard benefits include a monthly electronic newsletter, priority access to the raffle and sales tables at meetings, sponsorship of guest speakers, and invitations to members-only garden and nursery tours. Once a year, on the fourth Monday of October, the society holds an auction at Fairchild’s Montgomery Garden House. The preview begins at 7:00 pm and bidding at 7:30 pm. Cash, checks and credit cards are accepted, and the proceeds fund the following year’s student scholarships as well as meeting expenses. The auction is open to the public, while the tours remain reserved for current members.

Student Scholarships and Educational Outreach

Since 2019 the society has awarded annual scholarships to undergraduate and graduate students at Florida International University, Miami Dade College and the University of Miami who are pursuing degrees in horticulture, biology or botany. The scholarships are intended to encourage study, research and cultivation of the native and exotic flora of subtropical Florida, and to support students at the early stage of their professional careers. Applicants must submit a written application together with one faculty letter of recommendation, and the deadline each year is October 15. The scholarship committee reviews all submissions, sets the number of awards and the dollar amounts based on application quality and the society’s financial situation, and announces recipients at the end-of-year members’ meeting.

Governance and Public Resources

The society is governed by a Board of Directors elected by the membership in accordance with its Florida Not For Profit Corporation bylaws. The board comprises a president, vice president, recording secretary, corresponding secretary, treasurer and several at-large directors, with terms and duties defined in the bylaws. The full bylaws document, titled BYLAWS OF THE TROPICAL FERN & EXOTIC PLANT SOCIETY, INC., is published on the official website and covers membership classes, board elections and annual financial review procedures. The society also maintains a curated Resources section listing reliable web sources on fern biology, exotic plant care, South Florida gardening and recommended publications, providing an entry point for newcomers to the hobby.
