Origins as a 1970s Study Group

The Cascade Cactus and Succulent Society of Washington State (CCSS) began in the 1970s as a small Seattle-area study group of growers who traded tips and stories about cacti and succulents. Monthly Meetings at Phinney Neighborhood Center

Growing Succulents in the Pacific Northwest

Most CCSS members live in the rainy, humid Pacific Northwest, where winter light is limited and moisture stays high. The club has documented a local cultivation approach that uses very gritty, fast-draining mixes—often a 50/50 blend of potting soil and pumice or perlite—so that water runs straight through the pot. Summer means moving plants outdoors for direct sun, while winter usually requires a cool, dry rest for many cacti to bloom the following year. The club’s published FAQ stresses that members swap locally acclimated cuttings and seeds because generic desert advice rarely applies on the wet coast.

Annual Fundraiser Plant Sale and Field Events

Each August the club hosts its annual fundraiser plant sale at Volunteer Park Conservatory, 1400 E Galer St, Seattle, WA 98112. The 2025 sale ran Saturday, August 16 from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm and Sunday, August 17 from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm, with more than a dozen vendors offering rare cacti, succulents, pots, and soil amendments. Members also display specimen plants and answer questions from new growers. The calendar also includes a summer picnic, a greenhouse field trip, and spring excursions to see Pediocactus nigrispinus in its native eastern Washington habitat.
