Palm and Cycad Societies of Australia

其一是会员制邮购书店 (Bookstore),以低于零售价提供澳大利亚本地难以获得的棕榈、苏铁专著与期刊,是澳大利亚最完整的单一植物门类专业书店;其二是 1986 年设立的出版基金 (Publication Fund),截至目前已资助出版 8 部原创作品,包括 Robert Tucker 的《Palms of Subequatorial Queensland》、John L. Dowe 的《Palms of The South-West Pacific》、Keith Boyer 的《Palms and Cycads Beyond the Tropics》与 Peter Heibloem 的《Cycads of Central Africa》等核心专著;其三是季刊《PALMS & CYCADS》(ISSN 2208-7729,原名《Magazine of the Palm & Cycad Society of Australia》),面向爱好者与专业收藏者刊登技术与非技术文章,并作为出版基金新项目的发布渠道。

The Palm & Cycad Society of Australia Inc. (PACSOA) is a federally registered Australian horticultural association founded in 1984 and headquartered in Brisbane, Queensland. It is one of the most comprehensive online resources for the palm family (Arecaceae, roughly 202 genera and 2,600 species) and the cycad order (Cycadophyta, about 11 genera and 250 species worldwide). The Society operates a federation model: a Brisbane-based Board coordinates national programs while regional branch groups run their own meetings, field trips, and newsletters, with all executive and non-elected positions held by volunteer enthusiasts.

History and Organizational Structure

PACSOA evolved from an informal information exchange that existed before 1984 into a federally incorporated society. It is registered in Brisbane, Queensland, and pursues four formal objectives: promoting the propagation and cultivation of palms and cycads, education and knowledge dissemination among enthusiasts, scientific study, and the conservation of endangered species in the wild, particularly African cycad genera such as Encephalartos. From its earliest years PACSOA has maintained an affiliation with the International Palm Society (I.P.S.) and collaborates on quarterly publications, joint funding initiatives, and reciprocal membership benefits.

Resource Programs and Publishing

The Society runs three flagship public programs. First, the members-only Bookstore offers substantial discounts on palm and cycad titles that are largely unobtainable elsewhere in Australia, serving as the country’s most complete single-family specialty bookshop. Second, the Publication Fund, established in 1986, has underwritten eight original works, including Robert Tucker’s Palms of Subequatorial Queensland, John L. Dowe’s Palms of The South-West Pacific, Keith Boyer’s Palms and Cycads Beyond the Tropics, and Peter Heibloem’s Cycads of Central Africa. Third, the quarterly journal PALMS & CYCADS (ISSN 2208-7729, formerly Magazine of the Palm & Cycad Society of Australia) publishes both technical and non-technical articles and serves as the announcement channel for new Publication Fund projects.

Wiki Platform and Species Database

The Society’s website is built on the MediaWiki platform and functions as a community-edited encyclopedia. Palm entries span small clustering foliage species such as Chamaedorea elegans (parlour palm) and Lytocaryum weddellianum (wedding palm) through to large solitary specimens including Bismarckia nobilis (Bismarck palm) and Livistona australis (Australian cabbage palm). Cycad coverage addresses the roughly 250 known species, with detailed cultivation notes for Cycas revoluta (sago palm), Lepidozamia peroffskyana, Zamia furfuracea (cardboard sago), and Dioon spinulosum, among others. Members can register, edit existing articles, and upload images, extending the volunteer-driven knowledge model that has operated since 1984.

Membership and Community Engagement

PACSOA accepts members worldwide. Core benefits include attending regular meetings and online Zoom presentations, exchanging knowledge with palm and cycad specialists, winning unusual plants at meeting raffles, and joining weekend visits to members’ private gardens. Regional branch groups independently organize field trips, nursery tours, and outdoor activities, and publish their own local newsletters. All executive and non-elected positions are voluntary, with no paid staff; longer-term participation routes through the Publication Fund, the Bookstore, and the journal’s editorial workflow have helped sustain the platform for more than four decades.
