Origins at Winborne Arboretum and the 1994 Turnaround Under a Grasses Specialist
Knoll Gardens sits in the village of Hampreston near Wimborne in East Dorset, and is widely regarded as the United Kingdom’s leading specialist nursery for ornamental grasses and flowering perennials. The site began as part of Winborne Arboretum, which first opened to the public in the 1870s, alongside a working market garden and nursery known simply as “The Knoll”. Phyllis Reiss and her family owned the property through much of its early history and developed many hybrid rhododendrons there, including the first hybrid Phygelius, the Cape fuchsia selection Phygelius African Queen. New owners took the property over in 1988, renamed it Knoll Gardens and began turning it into a garden with a strong naturalistic character. In 1994, internationally acclaimed gardener Neil Lucas joined and began shaping the present-day garden, a moment the nursery itself marks as the point at which Knoll began its transformation into the naturalistic garden it is recognised as today.
A Grasses-led Naturalistic Planting Style with Year-round Seasonal Rhythm
Under Neil Lucas, Knoll has charted a distinctly different course from the conventional British mixed border, rejecting the idea of trying to control nature and instead working in partnership with it, guided by the “right plant, right place” principle. The garden is organised into a series of linked yet distinct areas, each matched to the growing conditions a particular group of plants prefers, weaving ornamental grasses with flowering perennials, specimen trees and shrubs, and seasonal bulbs into a coherent, low-input, high-impact landscape. Featured plants include Miscanthus Memory, whose near-white flowers almost glow in the sunshine; Pennisetum Fairy Tails and Pennisetum Dark Desire, with their caterpillar-like fluffy flower spikes; Hakonechloa macra, the Japanese forest grass whose refined linear leaves contrast beautifully with hard surfaces and other plants; and a wider palette of Panicum, Deschampsia, Calamagrostis and Molinia. From spring emergence through autumn colour and on into winter, the garden offers a perpetually changing calendar of texture, form and light.
The Knoll Gardens Foundation, Community Gardens and Wildlife Surveys
In 2008 the nursery registered the Knoll Gardens Foundation (KGF, registered charity number 1159390) with the strapline “Look, Learn and Share”. Its mission is to develop a deeper understanding of the relationship between Knoll’s naturalistic style, the garden’s wildlife and the wider environment, and to share what is learned with gardeners, designers and the wider public. The Foundation’s work covers four main strands: long-term surveys of butterflies, dragonflies, bees, amphibians, moths and other garden wildlife, much of it carried out by volunteers, with newer eDNA techniques under consideration; a volunteer programme that helps with garden care, plant labelling and a database of every living plant on site; outreach to local community gardens and school gardens, sharing the nursery’s experience of low-impact, wildlife-friendly gardening and adding new interpretation boards around the garden; and public engagement through Foundation Fridays, group visits and other events.
Home Production, Peat-free Composts and the Mail Order System
Knoll Gardens is unusual among modern specialist nurseries in producing well over 90 percent of the plants it sells on its own two-acre growing ground, split into the older Old Field and the newer New Field, using seed, cuttings and mother stock from the nursery and the garden itself. Only a limited number of starter or liner plants are bought from other respected British nurseries to bulk up stock or introduce new lines, and the nursery has not bought plants from outside the UK for many years. Plants are grown with minimal protection in peat-free composts based on Melcourt’s Sylvamix, topped with a specially formulated potting bark that suppresses weeds and reduces the need for irrigation, an approach the nursery has followed for more than twenty-five years. Customers can either visit the well-stocked plant centre in person or order through the mail order service in 2 litre or 9 cm pots; every order is checked three times, hand-picked, trimmed where necessary and packed on the same day it is dispatched.
Public Opening, Neil Lucas’s Books and Consultancy Services
The garden and nursery are currently open Wednesday to Saturday, 10am to 5pm, with last admission thirty minutes before closing, and may close early or open late during periods of high wind, severe frost or extreme rain; admission to the gardens is Adult £8.95, Concessions £7.95, Child (5-16) £6.95, Disabled Person with carer £7.95 (carer free), and a pre-booked Group Rate of £7.00 per person for groups of twelve or more, while the nursery itself is free to enter and RHS members are admitted free under the current Members’ Handbook. Self-service refreshments, free on-site parking and largely wheelchair-accessible paths are available, with The Old Thatch Inn roughly half a mile away and the locally popular Flower Barn Cafe next door at Brothers Farm, plus nearby Premier Inn and Travelodge options. Neil Lucas regularly speaks and lectures on ornamental grasses in the UK and overseas; his second book, “Grasses for Gardens and Landscapes”, was published by Timber Press and launched at the Chelsea Flower Show on 22 May 2023, and during his thirtieth-anniversary year at Knoll is offered signed at a special price of £30 (plus £5.99 postage) against the £40 RRP. The nursery also offers a free general planting advice service and paid consultancy sessions with Neil Lucas at £90 per hour or £45 per half hour, alongside Grass Masterclass and other workshops, making the site both a garden to visit and a working reference for naturalistic grass-led planting.
