Institutional History

BMR Greenhouses & Water Gardens Ltd. is a family-run greenhouse and water-garden retailer located in Leduc County within the Edmonton metropolitan area of Alberta, Canada; the firm has been operating continuously on the same site for more than 40 years, combines roughly 35,000 square feet of open-concept greenhouse and retail display, and grows virtually all of its annuals, perennials, water plants, hanging baskets and patio planters in-house from seedlings to sales; it is a member of the Alberta Greenhouse Growers Association (AGGA) and a partner retailer of the Edmonton Horticultural Society and the local Edmonton Cactus & Succulent Club.

Signature Crops and In-House Production

The pepper program has expanded to more than 160 named cultivars in 2017 and exceeded 200 varieties by 2018, including the Carolina Reaper (the 2016 record holder), Bhut Jolakia, Trinidad Moruga Scorpion, 7Pot Douglah, Trinidad Scorpion Butch T and Naga Viper; the tomato program keeps more than 100 cultivars year-round, with 60-plus new heirloom varieties added in 2017; succulents and cacti occupy a dedicated greenhouse with terrarium-friendly vessels, and the water-garden department curates thousands of locally grown hardy aquatic plants, with Koi and pond fish available by special order.

Perennials and Designer Combinations

The perennial block features the blue-pot Heritage Perennials® line bred for climates from New England to the Pacific Northwest, and has recently added small fruits such as strawberries, blueberries, honeyberries, gooseberries, raspberries, cherries and hardy grapes; the annuals program centres on Proven Winners® and Wave with additional genetics from Dummen Orange and Danziger, and the team trial-grows dozens of new tomato and pepper selections each season; designer hanging baskets and patio combinations are hand-built by the in-house creative team to provide all-season colour, and the store stocks fountains, birdbaths, garden statues and themed pieces such as L’il Dragons and Gargoyles.

Soils, Seeds and Biological Pest Management

The garden centre sells the proprietary BMR custom-blend potting soil and succulent mix used for every plant grown on site, alongside organic seeds, organic seed potatoes, organic fertilizers, soil enhancers and a newly added non-GMO seed line; for more than 35 years the team has relied on beneficial insects such as ladybugs rather than chemical sprays, and the work is documented on the company’s Instagram; member discounts of 10 % are extended to card-carrying members of the Edmonton Horticultural Society and the Edmonton Cactus & Succulent Club.

Community Engagement and Seasonal Operations

The greenhouse is a long-time supporter of Growing for the Cure for the Alberta Cancer Foundation, donating one dollar for every specially marked item sold, and actively backs the MS Bike Tour, Communities in Bloom and other local charities; in 2016 weekend charity barbecues raised and contributed more than CAD 7,000 to community groups; the retail season normally opens around 1 May and runs through the end of August (weather permitting), with weekly specials starting on the Mother’s Day weekend, and the 2026 summer opening hours are 9:00-19:00 on weekdays and 9:00-17:00 on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays; well-behaved leashed dogs are welcome, and four working cats roam the grounds.
