Origins of the Nursery
Barnhaven was founded in 1936 by Florence Hurtig Bellis on the slope beside an old barn near Portland, Oregon. She exchanged her last five dollars for a few packets of Suttons primrose seeds and began the hybridising programme which still defines the nursery. After thirty years in Oregon the operation moved to the English Lake District and later crossed the Channel to the hamlet of Keranguiner in Plestin-les-Grèves, Côtes d’Armor, Brittany, where it is based today. The nursery is the custodian of the French National Collection of Primula and keeps the founder’s hand-pollination methods in routine use.
Production and Plant Range
The site holds four shade tunnels and six open-sided polytunnels, all unheated, with winter lows close to minus five degrees Celsius. Every seed is produced by hand pollination in the manner of Florence Bellis; pods are picked singly, threshed by hand or small machine, and kept refrigerated until dispatch. The catalogue covers European primulas, Asian primulas (candelabras, Primula sieboldii, bell-shaped primulas), the Barnhaven-bred Gold-laced Polyanthus, striped and double Victorian lines, Cowichans, Hellebores and Cyclamen, with more than 400 species and several thousand named cultivars.
Visits and Ordering
The nursery is open to visitors from February to May, Tuesday to Saturday, 14:00 to 17:00, with three special open weekends at the end of February, the first weekend of March and the last weekend of May (during Trégor en Fleurs), running 10:00 to 18:00 with guided tours and demonstrations. Outside those hours appointments can be made by phone or email. Click + Collect, postal dispatch and on-site seed sales are offered; payment by cash, cheque or bank card is accepted. Plant orders placed after 30 June are dispatched in autumn, while seed orders continue through the summer.
Press and Recognition
Barnhaven has been covered regularly by French gardening media including Détente Jardin, L’art des Jardins, Mon Jardin & Ma Maison, Rustica, L’Ami des jardins and Le Figaro, with broadcast features on France 2, TV Trégor and TF1 13h news. The nursery displays the Conservatoire Français des Collections Végétales Spécialisées (CCVS) badge and follows its rules on naming and propagation.
Organisation Profile
Barnhaven has been producing and breeding primulas without interruption for ninety years, with five successive owners since 1936. The current Brittany-based team continues the founder’s hand-pollination routine, takes on seasonal interns and volunteers, and keeps plant names and propagation standards aligned with the French CCVS certification scheme.
