Barenbrug China (“百绿中国”) is the Royal Barenbrug Group’s sales and localisation platform in China, comprising Barenbrug (Tianjin) International Co., Ltd. and a Beijing branch office that exclusively market the Group’s proprietary grass seed varieties and branded products in the Chinese market. Founded by Joseph Barenbrug in the Netherlands in 1904, the Group is one of the longest-established family businesses in the global grass seed industry; in 2004 it was granted the “Royal” predicate by the Dutch Crown in recognition of more than a century of contribution to the sector. Today it is run by the fourth generation of the Barenbrug family, ranks as the world’s second-largest grass seed company and is the largest family-owned business in the industry.
Group Profile and Centenary Heritage
Headquartered in the Netherlands, the Royal Barenbrug Group operates a global research and production network spanning the main climate zones of six continents, with a workforce and trial-station footprint that has long placed it at the top of the family-owned segment of the grass seed industry. The Group’s core activities cover plant breeding, seed production and the international marketing of turf, forage and legume seeds, with quality, service and a long-term family stewardship ethos that have remained consistent for more than 120 years. The “Royal” predicate awarded in 2004 reflects both its longevity and its standing as a model of family governance and sustainable management in Europe; its worldwide business is delivered through a network of operating companies including Barenbrug USA, Barenbrug Australia, Barenbrug Holland and Barenbrug New Zealand. In 2020 the Group finalised the acquisition of Simplot’s Jacklin® Seed business, further strengthening its position in the world’s largest grass seed market.
China Subsidiary and Local Partnerships
Barenbrug China was established in 1999 as the first wholly foreign-owned enterprise in the Chinese grass and legume seed industry, and has long served as the exclusive channel for the Group’s proprietary varieties in China, including tall fescue, ryegrass, Kentucky bluegrass, bentgrass, white clover, bermudagrass, zoysiagrass, bahiagrass, annual ryegrass, forage sweet sorghum, chicory, lablab, timothy, cocksfoot and alfalfa. In April 2014 the Group entered a strategic partnership with Beijing Rytway Ecotechnology Co., Ltd., which became the majority shareholder of Barenbrug (Tianjin) International Co., Ltd.; the China operation continues to operate as an independent company under exclusive licence to market the Group’s proprietary varieties and branded products. Barenbrug China now runs nationwide research and sales networks together with partners including the Nanjing Institute of Botany of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Qinghai University’s Grassland Research, the Beijing Academy of Agriculture and Forestry Sciences, Jiangsu Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Inner Mongolia Agricultural University and China Agricultural University, conducting joint breeding and regional variety trials across the country.
Core Products and Innovation Pipeline
The Group’s portfolio of representative turf, sports-field, home-lawn, forage and soil-conservation varieties includes Lingzhi (凌志), Reebok (锐步), Bester (百思特), Barun (巴润), Shouxiang (首相), Dingfeng (顶峰), Baiqi (百琪), Kaola (考拉), Tegao (特高), Leshi (乐食), Kaimo (楷模), Youke (游客), Sandeli (三得利), Huanghou (皇后), Debao (德宝), Saite (赛特) and Dalishi (大力士), all of which have been promoted in the Chinese market over many years. Its global R&D organisation has produced several well-known innovations including RPR regenerating perennial ryegrass, NutriFibre high-fibre forage ryegrass, SOS Super Over Seeding and Yellow Jacket seed enhancement technology, which together address sports-field overseeding, home-lawn repair, persistent pasture improvement and water-efficient turf management. In China, the company’s premium turf-type tall fescue and ryegrass varieties are widely used on golf courses, football pitches, urban landscapes and high-end residential lawns, while its forage and soil-conservation varieties serve grassland improvement and ecological restoration programmes across Northwest, North and Northeast China.
Industry Role and Sustainability Commitments
As the world’s second-largest grass seed company and the largest family-owned player in the industry, the Royal Barenbrug Group pursues long-term innovation aimed at reducing irrigation water, chemical inputs and mowing frequency, thereby delivering more environmentally and animal-friendly seed solutions to farmers, ranchers and city managers. Its corporate ambition is to achieve climate neutrality across the entire value chain – from R&D through production to customer service – by 2040, while the Helping with Hands Foundation regularly mobilises employees worldwide to volunteer in environmental, educational and sports projects. Barenbrug China extends this global strategy into the Chinese market by introducing region-appropriate grass varieties and technical services to growers and partners, and by contributing to national grass industry research and capability-building through joint breeding programmes and regional variety trials.
