Marc Colombel and the Société Bretonne du Rhododendron
Marc Colombel is a French horticulturist and rhododendron scholar based in Brittany. He founded the Société Bretonne du Rhododendron (SBR) in 1993 and served as its first president for fourteen years. SBR is one of the earliest French organizations dedicated to the genus Rhododendron, with a remit to gather cultivation experience, breeding records, and botanical knowledge from the mild oceanic climate of northwestern France for a French- and English-reading audience. His personal site rhodophiles.com and the SBR site at rhododendron.fr together form the principal French-language resource on the genus.
The Three-Layer Library of One Thousand Species and Twenty-Five Thousand Hybrids
The site is organized for beginners. Six core themes are covered: the etymology of the genus name (Greek rhodos “rose” plus dendron “tree”, formally named by Carl von Linné), reference entries for roughly one thousand wild species, parentage and hybridizer information on an estimated twenty-five thousand hybrids, cultivation notes (light, soil pH, pruning, transplanting), pest and disease identification (Phytophthora root rot, spittlebugs, leafhoppers, aphids), and the four standard propagation methods (sowing, cuttings, grafting, layering). Marc Colombel opens the home page with a verbatim request of forgiveness: “I humbly ask forgiveness of all the rhododendrons I have caused to die through ignorance or bad advice. May this site help beginners, as we all are one day, to avoid making the same mistakes.”
Four Decades of Writing and International Convention Speaking
Marc Colombel has published continuously in French and international rhododendron journals since the 1980s. He received the American Rhododendron Society Silver Medal in 2008 and the ARS Gold Medal in 2024. He has been a featured speaker at major international gatherings: the 2010 Bremen International Rhododendron Symposium in Germany, the 2015 ARS Convention in Sydney, BC, the 2017 ARS Convention in Eureka, California, the 2019 ARS Convention in Parksville, BC, and the 2022 ARS Conventions in Vancouver and Parksville. In 2014 he established a polyploid rhododendron conservatory at the Château de Josselin in Brittany, dedicated to the field maintenance and public display of European tetraploid, hexaploid, and octoploid rhododendrons.
Links Network and the Weekly Garden Photograph
The site maintains a curated links list of major rhododendron collections and personal web resources: Bodnant Garden and Trewithen in the United Kingdom, Bremen Park in Germany, Sofiero in Sweden, Emu Valley in Australia, Mendocino Botanical Gardens and Meerkerk Gardens in the United States, Pukeiti in New Zealand, and the Rhododendron Species Foundation; alongside Don Hyatt’s American azalea site, Steve Henning’s Rhododendron & Azalea Pages (2012 Silver Medal), the Jim Barlup hybridizer archive, and three Vireya tropical rhododendron sites (UK, USA, New Zealand). Marc Colombel publishes a weekly photograph on the home page with short observation notes, ranging from a hundred-year-old Rhododendron Broughtonii to grafted understock comparisons and seasonal bloom charts. SBR maintains a separate polyploid trial database at sbr.bzh documenting the field performance of 4n, 6n, and 8n rhododendron selections.
