Organisation Profile and History

Rhododendronforeningen — the Danish Rhododendron Society, known in English as the Danish Chapter of the American Rhododendron Society — is Denmark’s national society for the genus Rhododendron and the longest-established Danish chapter under the American Rhododendron Society (ARS). It is dedicated to promoting the cultivation, propagation, pruning and hybridisation of rhododendrons and azaleas across Denmark. The society runs the rhododendron.dk information portal built and maintained by Hans Rudolf Lytchoff Eiberg since 1996, and serves roughly 300 members in cooperation with the sister society in southern Sweden.

Board of Directors and Governance

The society is governed by a board elected at the annual general meeting (Generalforsamling). Following the 2026 election, Bjarne S. Petersen serves as Chair, with Vice-Chair Mathias Kurstjens (since 2023), Treasurer Anders Bach (since 2022) and Secretary Thomas Carlsen (since 2020) on the executive committee. Board members include Anne Morell — who also edits the quarterly bulletin RhodoNyt — and Sten Nørkjær, with Bo Thøger Christensen and Poul Erik Christensen joining as alternates in 2026. Hans Eiberg has been webmaster since 1996, and the RhodoNyt bulletin is published three times a year in January, March and September.

Core Activity: Gammelkjøgegaard Rhododendron Park

The society curates one of Denmark’s largest living Rhododendron collections at Gammelkjøgegaard Rhododendron Park in Køge, Zealand, a heritage estate whose grounds were redesigned in 1967 by landscape architect Professor C. Th. Sørensen and Else Collet. The dedicated species and hybrid rhododendron plantings have been maintained jointly by the society and the Carlsen-Langes Legatstiftelse since 1980; a new “Danske hybrider” (Danish hybrids) section was opened on 11 May 2024 during the society’s 50th anniversary celebrations. The park is open to the public on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays from 14:00 to 18:00, and the society’s broader photo archive documents more than 800 species and varieties.

Member Services, Publications and International Trips

Members receive three issues per year of RhodoNyt, an annual programme of lectures by visiting and local speakers, hands-on grafting and cutting courses, the spring “Open Gardens” circuit run by the East and West Denmark regional committees, the Danish contribution to the ARS Seed Exchange, and the society’s own RF seed sale (members from 15 December, non-members from 1 February, at DKK 30/60 per portion). Since 2010 the society has organised member expeditions to China’s Yunnan and Sichuan provinces, Bhutan, Sikkim, India, Scotland, Turkey and the United States. A-membership (DKK 550, with printed JARS) carries full ARS membership; B-membership (DKK 275) covers the Danish society only.

ARS Awards and International Collaboration

Several members have received ARS medals in recognition of their contributions: Hans Eiberg was awarded the ARS Gold Medal in 2018 for more than two decades of website stewardship, pioneering DNA-sequence work applied to Rhododendron taxonomy and field expeditions to China, while Jens Christian Birck received the ARS Gold Medal the same year for hybridising, photography and critical observation. Henning Christensen received the ARS Silver Medal in 2022 and Henrik Schmidt the ARS Bronze Medal in 2021. The society maintains long-standing partnerships with the Royal Horticultural Society Rhododendron, Magnolia and Camellia Group (UK), the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, Rhododendron Park Bremen, the Rhododendron Species Foundation and Rhododendron Species Botanical Garden (USA), the Hobbie Rhododendron Garden in Westerstede (Germany) and Milde Arboret in Bergen (Norway).
