协会概况与维多利亚州核心地位

会员服务、出版与公开活动
协会通过 DRBG 内的俱乐部会所（Club House）每周二上午 9 点至下午 2 点举办志愿小组活动，会员可参与杜鹃花扦插、嫁接、栽培与园区维护；出版物方面，协会自 1977 年起编辑《The Rhododendron》年刊（Volume 11 至 Volume 52 跨越 1997 至 2013 年），并按月发布 ARS Victoria Newsletter 通讯，档案室完整保留 2004 至 2013 年的会议纪要、专题论文与公开讲座资料；协会每年组织春秋季的会员花园开放日（Open Gardens）、拍卖会与植物销售活动，公众可通过 DRBG Tearooms / Club House 直接参与，会员享有协会自繁稀有物种（商业苗圃不可得的非进口种）的优先购买权。

Society Profile and Victorian Core Identity
The Australian Rhododendron Society (ARS or ARSV) is a national horticultural society for the genus Rhododendron, founded in 1960 in Victoria by a group of enthusiasts from the Ferny Creek Horticultural Society. Its mission is to foster interest in rhododendrons and to share technical knowledge on species and hybrids suited to Australian climatic conditions. The society is headquartered at the Dandenong Ranges Botanic Garden (DRBG) in Olinda, east of Melbourne, and operates state branches in South Australia, Tasmania, New South Wales (Illawarra) and Queensland (Tamborine Mountain Botanic Gardens), making it one of the most influential national rhododendron societies in Australia.
Governance and 2026 Committee
The society is administered by a committee elected at the annual general meeting. The 2026 office bearers are President Andrew Rouse (Victoria), Vice-President John O’Hara (Victoria), Secretary Emma Moysey (Victoria) and Treasurer Prue Crome (Victoria). Core Activity: DRBG Living Collection and Conservation
Since 1960 the society has curated a world-class living collection of rhododendrons within the Dandenong Ranges Botanic Garden. The collection brings together Asiatic and Melanesian species and hybrids, many of which can no longer be legally imported into Australia, giving the planting irreplaceable value for botanical conservation and germplasm preservation in Australia. The holdings are organised geographically into three themed projects: the American Deciduous Species Collection, the Australian Cloud Forest Collection and the Japanese Azalea Species Collection. Plant identification, cultivar registration and hybrid record-keeping are maintained by the Registrar and volunteer teams, making this one of the largest Rhododendron germplasm repositories in the country.
Member Services, Publications and Public Programs
The society runs a volunteer programme every Tuesday from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm at the ARS Club House within DRBG, where members take part in propagation by cuttings and grafting, plant care and garden maintenance. Its publications include The Rhododendron annual journal (Volumes 11–52 covering 1997 to 2013), the ARS Victoria Newsletter series issued between 2004 and 2013, and an archive of meeting minutes, technical papers and public lectures. The society also organises spring and autumn Open Garden days, plant auctions and retail plant sales open to the public, with members receiving first access to society-propagated rare species that are not commercially available.
State Branches and International Collaboration
Through its interstate liaison network the society coordinates annual conventions, regional shows and reciprocal garden visits with branches in South Australia, Tasmania, the Illawarra region of New South Wales and Queensland. Internationally it maintains long-standing exchanges with the American Rhododendron Society, the Royal Horticultural Society Rhododendron and Camellia Group (UK), the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh and Rhododendron Park Bremen. Recent ARS Conventions have been hosted at Burnie, Tasmania (2012), Stirling, South Australia (2013) and Edinburgh (2013), covering deciduous rhododendron cultivation, species conservation, lace bug and powdery mildew management, hybrid selection and a 2012 Vireya Hunting expedition to North Queensland documenting several tropical highland rhododendron habitats.
