About

PlantNebraska (formerly Nebraska Statewide Arboretum) is a member-based nonprofit headquartered in Lincoln, Nebraska, housed at the University of Nebraska. Founded in 1978, the organization is dedicated to planting Nebraska for healthy people, vibrant communities and a resilient environment through tree planting, garden making, education and community building. After more than four decades of statewide outreach, PlantNebraska became the umbrella organization for Nebraska’s network of arboretums and public gardens. In 2023, the organization officially rebranded from “Nebraska Statewide Arboretum” to “PlantNebraska” to better reflect its current mission and vision.

Mission and Values

PlantNebraska’s mission is to plant Nebraska for healthy people, vibrant communities and a resilient environment. The organization operates on six core values: purposeful beauty (creating ecologically sound gardens celebrating native plants), science and evidence-based reasoning (drawing on decades of research to recommend best plants and practices for Nebraska’s diverse ecoregions), the connecting power of trees and plants (studies show residents near greenspaces know neighbors better and feel safer), the importance of relationships and collaboration, the belief that individuals can make a difference, and commitment to transparency and integrity.

Arboretum Network

PlantNebraska operates a statewide network of local gardens and arboretums with the goal of “taking the arboretum to the people.” Any garden or landscape in Nebraska can apply to join the network as a PlantNebraska affiliate. Affiliates receive funding opportunities, technical support, discounts on plants and labels, promotion, mentorship, and access to curator meetings and idea exchanges. The network includes Landscape Steward Sites (recognizing managed landscapes with excellence in design, plant diversity and maintenance) and Community Arboretums (recognizing communities with excellence in promotion, planting, species diversity and care of the local community forest).

Programs and Services

PlantNebraska offers multiple funding programs and services including: Trees for Nebraska Towns (providing low-cost trees for town greening), Greener Towns (helping small towns with sustainable landscape improvements), Urban and Community Forestry Grants, landscape design services, a speaker request program, and educational resources covering plants, flowers, trees, gardening basics, wildlife gardening, kids gardening, and waterwise landscaping. Annual highlight events include the Spring Affair plant sale and Garden Walks.

Membership and Support

PlantNebraska operates on a membership model, with membership dues supporting the organization’s tree planting and horticultural education work across the state. Members enjoy priority access to events and plant discounts. The organization also accepts individual donations, memorial and tribute plantings, and recurring Patreon support. Volunteer opportunities are available for hands-on tree planting and community events. Financial information is publicly available.
