历史沿革与单位性质
武汉市园林科学研究院成立于 1973 年，是全国最早成立的园林科研院所之一，经过五十余年发展，科研条件位于全国前列，科研实力位居全国前五。单位为武汉市园林和林业局直属公益一类事业单位，编制 80 个，现已形成以风景园林为核心、覆盖生态、湿地、植物保护、古树名木、土壤环境、景观规划等多学科的综合性园林科研机构。
职能定位与机构设置
研究院承担科学研究、成果推广、科普教育三大职能，主要从事景观规划研究、湿地保护、植物研究、植物病虫害研究与防控、园林和林业生态研究、植物营养研究、土壤肥料检测与改良、濒危植物及古树名木研究与保护，以及园林科技服务、科普宣传和职业教育培训等工作。现内设 13 个部门，包括景观和规划研究所、湿地保护与发展研究所、植物研究所、植物保护研究所、土壤环境研究所、生态研究所 6 个科研部门，科研管理科、科技推广科、科技创新与信息中心、种苗试验中心 4 个科研管理与成果转化部门，综合办公室、组织人事科、计划财务科 3 个综合管理部门。
科研团队与科研条件
在编人员中，正高级职称 4 人、副高级职称 19 人，博士研究生 4 人、硕士研究生 39 人。建院以来共承担科研课题 300 余项，是国家樱花种质资源库、中国风景园林学会植物保护专业委员会主任委员单位。下辖武汉市园林科普公园占地 177 亩，园内现有植物 400 余种，涵盖水杉、鹅掌楸、对节白蜡、紫楠、银木等各级保护植物。种苗试验中心位于武汉市江夏区安山镇，占地 1860 余亩，紧邻京珠高速和 107 国道，集科研示范、成果转化、苗木生产和技术中试于一体，主要研发新优苗木 60 余种，现存留圃地苗木约 20 余万株。
科研课题、成果与行业服务
研究院主要从事植物基础性与应用性研究、濒危植物及古树名木保护与研究、植物病虫害研究与防控、植物营养与土壤肥料检测改良、园林技术标准编制、园林职业技能鉴定及继续教育培训、园林生态环境研究、科技服务与成果推广、花卉苗木中试与生产、园林科普宣传等工作。先后获评国家樱花种质资源库、市直单位基层党建品牌、武汉市五一劳动奖状、模范职工之家、湖北省风景园林教育奖、湖北省科普教育基地等荣誉。自主选育的碗莲品种”霞光影波”斩获第 40 届全国荷花展览金银双奖，联合申报科研项目获 2020 年度中国风景园林学会科技进步二等奖，”莲基因组遗传变异与表达数据库”被国家基因库收录，三个荷花品种”佛手观音””鼓浪小红””霓裳曲”完成国际品种登录。
科普教育与社会服务
研究院是武汉园林行业专业技术人员继续再教育基地、武汉园林国家职业技能鉴定所和湖北省科普教育基地，是武汉园林绿化建设的重要科技支撑。持续开展园林病虫害预测预报、绿色驿站公益科普、青少年自然教育、社区结对帮扶等活动，定期组织全国科技活动周、全国科普日、荷花展与水生植物专题科普、市政协委员与人大代表调研接待。主办《武汉园林病虫害预测预报》期刊与《园林植保》内部交流资料，承担武汉市城市湿地分级分类保护管理策略研究、入侵害虫菊方翅网蝽的危害与防控技术研究等多项市级重点课题。
Historical Evolution and Institutional Status
Wuhan Landscape Architecture Scientific Research Institute was founded in 1973 and is one of the earliest landscape research institutes established in China. Over more than five decades, its research facilities rank among the top nationwide and its research capacity is positioned within the top five nationally. The institute is a public-interest Class-I institution under the Wuhan Municipal Bureau of Landscape and Forestry, with an establishment of 80 positions. It has grown into a comprehensive landscape research body covering landscape architecture, ecology, wetland conservation, plant protection, ancient and notable tree conservation, soil environment, and landscape planning.
Mandate and Organisational Structure
The institute carries three principal mandates: scientific research, extension of research outcomes, and public science education. Core work areas include landscape and planning research, wetland conservation, plant science, plant pest and disease control, urban forestry and landscape ecology, plant nutrition, soil and fertiliser testing and remediation, conservation of rare and endangered plants and ancient and notable trees, technical services and extension, horticultural skills certification and continuing education, horticultural ecology research, and horticultural science outreach. It is internally organised into 13 units: six research departments (Landscape and Planning, Wetland Conservation and Development, Plant Science, Plant Protection, Soil Environment, and Ecology); four research management and extension departments (Research Management, Science and Technology Extension, Science and Technology Innovation and Information, and Seedling Trial); and three general management departments (General Office, Human Resources, and Finance).
Research Team and Facilities
The current staff includes four professor-level senior researchers, 19 associate professor-level researchers, four PhD holders, and 39 master’s degree holders. The institute has undertaken more than 300 research projects since its founding. It serves as the National Cherry Blossom Germplasm Resource Bank and as the chair institution of the Plant Protection Committee of the Chinese Society of Landscape Architecture. The Wuhan Landscape Science Popularisation Park covers 177 mu with more than 400 plant species including national first-class protected species such as Metasequoia and second-class protected species such as Liriodendron chinense and Fraxinus hupehensis. The Seedling Trial Centre, located at Anshan Town in Jiangxia District covering more than 1860 mu adjacent to the Jingzhu Expressway and National Highway 107, integrates research demonstration, extension, seedling production, and technical trials, developing more than 60 new elite cultivars with approximately 200,000 nursery plants in stock.
Research Projects, Outcomes, and Industry Services
Research and extension activities cover basic and applied plant science, conservation of endangered species and ancient and notable trees, plant pest and disease control and prevention, plant nutrition and soil fertiliser testing and improvement, formulation of horticultural technical standards, horticultural vocational skills certification and continuing education, horticultural ecology research, technology services and extension of research outcomes, flower and seedling pilot production, and public science outreach. Honours include designation as the National Cherry Blossom Germplasm Resource Bank, the municipal-level grassroots party-building brand, the Wuhan May Day Labour Certificate, the Model Workers’ Home, the Hubei Provincial Landscape Architecture Education Award, and the Hubei Provincial Science Education Base. The bowl lotus cultivar Xiaguang Yingbo won gold and silver awards at the 40th National Lotus Exhibition, a jointly submitted research project received the 2020 Chinese Society of Landscape Architecture Science and Technology Progress Second Prize, the Lotus Genome Genetic Variation and Expression Database was incorporated into the China National GeneBank, and three lotus cultivars Foshou Guanyin, Gulang Xiaohong, and Nishang Qu completed international cultivar registration.
Public Science Education and Community Engagement
The institute serves as the continuing education base for professional and technical personnel in Wuhan’s landscape industry, the Wuhan Horticultural National Vocational Skills Appraisal Office, and the Hubei Provincial Science Education Base, functioning as an important scientific and technological support for Wuhan’s landscape greening efforts. It regularly delivers horticultural pest forecasting, the Green Station community outreach programme, youth nature education, and paired community support, organising the National Science and Technology Activity Week, the National Science Popularisation Day, lotus and aquatic plant exhibitions, and visits by municipal CPPCC members and people’s congress deputies. It publishes the Wuhan Horticultural Pest Forecasting bulletin and maintains the Landscape Plant Protection internal exchange material, and has led key municipal projects including the Wuhan Urban Wetland Graded and Classified Conservation and Management Strategy Study and the Harm and Control Technology Study of the Invasive Insect Corythucha ciliata.
