Author Background and Career

Ole Jonny Larsen is a retired Norwegian state-school teacher based in Spjelkavik, Ålesund municipality on Norway’s western coast, where he taught language, literature and history at public secondary level for decades. He and partner Kari Wiik curate roughly 400 wild Rhododendron species in a coastal home garden of about 1 700 m², a collection routinely cited as one of the largest private Rhododendron holdings in Norway.

Scholarly Writing and International Network

Larsen is a long-standing contributor to Norwegian, Danish and Swedish Rhododendron journals and has published more than thirty articles in the yearbooks and bulletins of the Royal Horticultural Society Rhododendron, Magnolia and Camellia Group (UK), the American Rhododendron Society Journal and the Rhododendron Species Foundation (USA). He also represents Europe on the ARS seed-exchange committee, helping coordinate conservation seed flow across the international community.

Books and Botanical Expeditions

His Norwegian-language books include The Great Plant Hunters (2008), Rhododendron in Norway (2011), Large-leaved Rhododendron in Norway (2017) and Skarbøvika in the 1960s, and he edited the 2014 compendium My Rhododendron Garden presenting 29 Norwegian collections. He joined three plant-hunting trips to China’s Yunnan and Sichuan provinces — the 2010 and 2013 Scandinavian Biluoxueshan & Baima Shan expeditions and the 2016 Central Sichuan Gongga massif trek — during which he documented a previously undescribed rose-pink variant of Rhododendron roxieanum.

Plant Sales and the Rhodogjengen Network

He mails roughly 1 000 seed-grown Rhododendron seedlings to European customers each year and sells additional species locally by appointment. He is also a founding member of Rhodogjengen, a four-person circle of Norwegian Rhododendron enthusiasts in the Ålesund region that meets several times a year to share plants, visit collections and run joint field trips. His 2024 expanded edition of Rhododendron i Norge documents more than 450 species and remains a central reference for Norwegian Rhododendron culture and conservation.
