Alberta Nurseries and Seeds Ltd., operating online as “Gardeners Web,” was a historic mail-order nursery in Bowden, Alberta, Canada. Founded in 1922 by the Berggren family, the company operated continuously for 87 years by 2009. Located on Highway 587 north of Bowden, the nursery reached its peak with approximately 130 acres of growing grounds and up to 125 employees, serving gardeners across Canada and the northern United States who needed hardy plant material suited to harsh prairie climates.
Product Range
The company offered more than ten categories of hardy seeds and nursery stock, including evergreens, flower seeds, fruit trees and bushes, herbs, houseplant seeds, lawn seed, ornamental grasses, perennials, trees and shrubs, summer bulbs, tools and accessories, and vegetable seeds. Its proprietary brand “Bow Seed” was sold alongside specialty products such as the “Weedseal” weed-suppression line. All seeds were field-tested and germination-checked at the company’s own facilities before release, with hardiness ratings based on Alberta Zone 3 conditions. Featured cultivars included Honeyberries (Lonicera caerulea edulis) recommended by the University of Saskatchewan, thornless “Black Satin” blackberry, deep orange coneflower “Tiki Torch,” prairie-hardy cherry “Carmine Jewel,” and dwarf Asiatic pot lily “Tiny Icon.”
Operations and Services
The nursery operated both wholesale and retail channels. Its Garden Center was located at Marketland Mall in Bowden for roughly thirty years before moving back to the main nursery property in 2007. Customers could order through the printed Canadian Gardening Guide catalog, by phone, or via the company website, with shipping available across Canada and the northern United States. The RNGR reforestation directory listed the company as a private retail and wholesale nursery, and noted a sister operation called “Bow Point Nursery.”
Closure and Legacy
The company was acquired by Sundre-area grain farmer Paul Leussink in 2016, after which the original nursery business ceased operations. The former buildings in Bowden were vandalized shortly after closure, causing more than CAD 50,000 in damage. Leussink announced plans to convert the site into a dog kennel and pet resort, while developing 90 surrounding acres as highway-commercial property. The original “Gardeners Web” domain, gardenersweb.ca, now redirects to an unrelated blog, marking the end of one of Canada’s longest-running mail-order nurseries.
