Jim Barlup

Mission and Community

The Victoria Rhododendron Society (VRS), based in the Victoria area of British Columbia, is a nonprofit community of growers, collectors, and enthusiasts. Formed in 1979, it promotes public interest in the genus Rhododendron through shared knowledge and friendship. VRS is a chapter of the American Rhododendron Society and belongs to the BC Council of Garden Clubs.

Meetings and Seasonal Activities

Regular meetings are generally held from September through June and combine educational presentations, demonstrations, plant exchanges, and informal discussion. The annual program also includes flower shows, garden tours, plant sales, and a seasonal picnic, giving both beginners and experienced growers opportunities to learn from local practice.

Propagation and Membership

A dedicated propagation group focuses on cuttings, seedlings, and the preservation of distinctive rhododendrons. The society maintains several membership classes, including full American Rhododendron Society chapter membership, associate membership for members of other chapters, and honorary life membership. Visitors are also welcome at regular meetings.

Jim Barlup Legacy Garden

One of the society’s major public projects is the Jim Barlup Legacy Garden at Esquimalt Gorge Park. It grew from members’ long-term collection of hybrids created by American breeder Jim Barlup. After the society received his remaining plant material, volunteers worked with the municipality to establish a public garden that preserves the cultivars and their breeding history.

Educational Resources

The VRS website brings together rhododendron FAQs, an online library catalogue, newsletters, event listings, and practical growing guidance. Topics include plant groups, acidic soils, drainage, light, pruning, nutrient deficiencies, and common disorders. These resources, combined with meetings and public projects, make VRS an important regional hub for rhododendron learning and conservation.
