协会创办与历史缘起
苏格兰杜鹃花协会（The Scottish Rhododendron Society, SRS）1983 年 8 月 25 日在苏格兰阿盖尔郡因弗雷雷的 Inveraray Arms 酒店召开成立大会，由英国杜鹃花分类权威 Ed Wright 和植物猎人代表 Peter Cox 牵头，最初以 “Scottish Chapter of the American Rhododendron Society”（美国杜鹃花协会苏格兰分会）的名义登记，是英语世界北美以外第一家英语分会。1990 年 9 月 13 日以同名独立向苏格兰慈善监管局 OSCR 登记成为合资格慈善，注册号 SC008975，主管机关为爱丁堡，公开年度财务显示 2024 财年收入 8,367 英镑、支出 5,655 英镑。1997 年学界讨论过更名为 “The Rhododendron Society” 或 “The Rhododendron & Azalea Society” 但都未落地。历经八任会长——首任 Dr F. Severne MacKenna（1984 年 2 月起）、Hamish Gunn、Ed Wright、Mervyn Kessell、Ian Douglas、David Stark、John Hammond、William Campbell，2025 年起由 Katrina Clow 接任。
出版物与杜鹃分类研究
协会自创立即致力于杜鹃属年报与评论刊物的连续出版。第一份会刊由 Ed Wright 在自己打字机上打出两页 A4 文稿，发展到 1998 年第一本年刊 The World of the Rhododendron Yearbook no.1，现年刊已发至 No.23（2022 年）。报告发行覆盖春夏秋冬四季，至 2022 年已编至 No.89。协会延续多年的蒲公英计划（Scottish Chapter of the American Rhododendron Society）参与瑞典皇家爱丁堡植物园（RBGE）杜鹃属分类调整讨论，1986 年 3 月 1 日专门召开 27 人闭门会议讨论 Edinburgh Revision，将熟悉杜鹃学名”lumped”合属争议列入保留事项。论文多次在 RHS 山茶花与杜鹃花组（RMCG）刊物发表，文献代表作之一是 David Rankin 的 “Non-Conformist Rhododendrons” 与 Peter Cox 的 “Lifetime Achievements of Peter Cox”。
全国杜鹃花展与会刊赛事
每年四月底协会在苏格兰不同城镇轮流举办全国杜鹃花展（National Rhododendron Show），设十四座永久奖杯，最古老的是 1953 年首次颁发的 Sir John Stirling Maxwell Trophy。2026 年展会的十四座奖杯——Kilarden Trophy、George Sherriff Cup、Harry Fairbairn Cup、Alan Clark Cup、David Stuart Cup、John Hammond Cup、Argyll & Bute Trophy、SRS Cup、Keyline Cup、Marlene Storah Cup、Mervyn Kessell Cup、Stephen Fox Picture Class、Wild Argyll Cup——由 Mike & Sue Thornley（Glenarn）、N.T.S. Crarae、Philip Rankin 等家庭花园摘得。2027 年 AGM 安排在 4 月 23 日下午 2 时于 Gibson Hall（Helensburgh 附近的 Garelochhead），花展在次日下午举行。
国际合办大会与教育探索基金
1996 年 5 月协会在奥本（Oban）Corran Halls 主办了美国杜鹃花协会（ARS）历史上首次北美以外的国际杜鹃花大会，五天会议、42 场园圃参观、17 辆包车以及一艘 CalMac 包船，开创了英语世界国际杜鹃花专业大会的先例。十多个国家派代表与会。2008 年 6 月 25 周年银禧大会移师爱丁堡皇家植物园 RBGE 举行，二十多个国家代表与会，同期出版 “Seeds of Adventure”（《冒险的种子》）专著与 200 余页大会文集。协会自 2022 年起设立 Education & Exploration Grant Fund（教育探索基金），每项资助最高 1,000 英镑，2023 年首例授予以 Richard Moore 赴尼泊尔干城章嘉峰植物调查，2024 年授予以 Colin Jones 赴中国云南西北部植物调查。
协会会员体系与组织网络
SRS 个人普通会员年费 18 英镑、家庭会员 20 英镑，A.R.S. + S.R.S. 双会会员 41 英镑（含数字版 A.R.S. 刊物）或 50 英镑（含纸质版 A.R.S. 刊物）。现有执委包括副主席 Tim Keyworth（旅游与活动）、荣誉副主席 Dr David Chamberlain 与 John Hammond、Mata Heasman（花展秘书）、Matt Heasman（花展经理）、Willie Campbell（种子交换经理）、Philip Rankin（教育基金）、Bryony White（理事）。副秘书 Annette Treble 于 2024 年接任。协会联合主办的有 RSCG（Rhododendron Species Conservation Group，OSCR SC038113，2007 年注册）等姊妹机构，主要参观目的地涵盖 Arkinglas、Attadale、Blackhills、Glenarn、Glendoick、Stonefield、Brodick、Benmore、Crarae、Arduaine 等十余家苏格兰经典杜鹃花园。
Founding and Heritage of the Society
The Scottish Rhododendron Society (SRS) was inaugurated on 25 August 1983 at the Inveraray Arms hotel in Inveraray, Argyll, by rhododendron authority Ed Wright and plant-hunter Peter Cox, originally registered under the name Scottish Chapter of the American Rhododendron Society. It became the first English-speaking chapter of the ARS outside North America. On 13 September 1990 the organisation was independently registered as a recognised Scottish charity under SC008975 with the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator (OSCR), headquartered in Edinburgh, with most recently reported annual income of £8,367 against expenditure of £5,655. Renaming proposals considered in 1997 — “The Rhododendron Society” and “The Rhododendron & Azalea Society” — were not adopted. The presidency has passed through Dr F. Severne MacKenna, Hamish Gunn, Ed Wright, Mervyn Kessell, Ian Douglas, David Stark, John Hammond, and William Campbell, with Katrina Clow taking office in 2025.
Publications and Rhododendron Taxonomy
The SRS has published continuously since its founding: from Ed Wright’s two-page typed A4 newsletter the society progressed to glossy yearbooks, and in 1998 issued the first volume of The World of the Rhododendron Yearbook (now yearbook No. 23, 2022). Quarterly Review publications run to No. 89 (2022). The society participated in the Edinburgh Revision of rhododendron nomenclature at RBGE, including a noted 27-attendee closed meeting on 1 March 1986 addressing the lumping controversy. Represented papers in the journal of the RHS Rhododendron, Camellia and Magnolia Group include Colin Mugridge and David Rankin’s “Successful Cultivation of Rhododendrons on Limestone” (2020) and David Rankin’s “Non-Conformist Rhododendrons”.
National Rhododendron Show and Competition
The National Rhododendron Show is held annually at the end of April at rotating venues, awarding fourteen permanent trophies, the oldest being the Sir John Stirling Maxwell Trophy first awarded in 1953. The 2026 results distributed the Kilarden Trophy, the George Sherriff Cup, the Harry Fairbairn Cup, the Alan Clark Cup, the David Stuart Cup, the John Hammond Cup, the Argyll & Bute Trophy, the SRS Cup, the Keyline Cup, the Marlene Storah Cup, the Mervyn Kessell Cup and the Stephen Fox Picture Class among Mike & Sue Thornley (Glenarn), N.T.S. Crarae, Philip Rankin and Alice Soutar. The 2027 AGM is scheduled for Friday 23 April at 2pm at Gibson Hall, Garelochhead, followed by the show on the next day.
International Conventions and the Education Fund
In May 1996 the SRS hosted at the Corran Halls, Oban, the first International Rhododendron Convention ever held outside North America, with 600 delegates, 42 garden tours, 17 hired coaches, and a specially chartered Caledonian-MacBrayne ferry for the Brodick excursion. The 2008 Silver Jubilee conference at RBGE assembled delegates from more than twenty countries and launched the book Seeds of Adventure alongside a 200-page proceedings volume. The Education & Exploration Grant Fund established in 2022 awards up to £1,000 to young horticulturists; recipients to date include Richard Moore (Nepal, Kanchenjunga, 2023) and Colin Jones (NW Yunnan, 2024).
Membership Structure and Sister Organisations
SRS individual membership is £18 per year, family membership £20, joint ARS+SRS chapter membership £41 (digital ARS publications) or £50 (printed), and associate membership £15 for existing ARS chapter members. Current committee officers include Vice-President and Tours & Events Manager Tim Keyworth, Honorary Vice-Presidents Dr David Chamberlain and John Hammond, Show Secretary Katrina Clow, Show Manager Matt Heasman, Seed Exchange Manager Willie Campbell, E&E Grant Fund chair Philip Rankin with committee members John Roy and Ian Sinclair, Director Bryony White, and Secretary Annette Treble (since 2024). Sister organisations with which the SRS works closely include the Rhododendron Species Conservation Group (OSCR SC038113, registered 2007 at Brecklet House, Ballachulish), and garden visits extend to Arkinglas, Attadale, Blackhills, Glenarn, Glendoick, Stonefield, Brodick, Benmore, Crarae, Arduaine and other classic Scottish rhododendron gardens.
