Japanese Friendship Garden & Museum

Overview

Located at 2215 Pan American Road East in San Diego’s Balboa Park, the Japanese Friendship Garden & Museum (JFGM) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization operated by the Japanese Friendship Garden Society of San Diego. The garden opened to the public in 1991 as an expression of the sister-city friendship between San Diego and Yokohama, Japan. Inspired by centuries-old Japanese garden design and techniques, the garden showcases plants and florae native to both Japan and San Diego. The lower garden features traditional Japanese landscaping and a koi pond, while the upper garden, designed by renowned landscape architect Takeo Uesugi, opened in 1999 with an exhibit hall, activity center, and upper koi pond.

Mission

As a sister-city exchange project, JFGM is dedicated to enhancing appreciation and understanding of Japanese culture. The garden’s mission is to “Educate, Engage & Inspire” through exhibitions, cultural festivals, and educational programs. The garden welcomes over 330,000 visitors annually from across the United States and internationally. As an accredited museum, JFGM offers diverse cultural events including Japanese language classes, tea demonstrations, Ikebana flower arranging, yoga, and meditation sessions for visitors of all ages.

Summer camps for grades 1-8 provide children hands-on experience with Japanese culture, wellness, and sustainability principles.

Sustainability

JFGM is committed to sustainability education and practice, offering programs such as Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) boxes, recycled washi paper making, and World Bee Day celebrations. The garden provides educational resources and school field trip programs offering children opportunities to connect with nature and learn about Japanese culture. JFGM holds LEED certification and receives financial support from the City of San Diego through the Commission for Arts and Culture.
