Bonsai Seikouen is a specialist bonsai nursery in Japan with a 170-year heritage tracing back to the late Edo period. It was founded by the first-generation master Shonosuke in the Negishi area of Taito Ward, Tokyo, and later relocated to the Omiya Bonsai-cho district of Saitama Prefecture after the wartime disruption. Generations of the Seikouen family have carried on Edo-style bonsai craftsmanship, keeping alive the aesthetic principle of “ma,” or meaningful negative space, a defining trait of the Edo school of bonsai design.
