A family nursery that started in 1948

Hameter is a perennial plant nursery in Baumgarten, Lower Austria, founded in 1948 by Emmerich Hameter. It began as a small garden design company and gradually turned into a nursery, because the founder had a lasting interest in herbaceous perennials. His daughter Helga Kottik joined in 1962 and later took over the business. Alexander Schmidhammer, the current head, joined in 1988 and took over from his mother in 2004. The nursery joined the Stauden Ring alliance in 2005. Today Hameter GmbH runs 28 staff on 3.5 hectares of production ground, raising its own young plants from propagation through potting and aftercare.

Wholesale only, no retail counter

The site states its position plainly: this is a nursery for professional customers, with no private sales. Its clients are trade buyers, mainly garden centres, landscaping contractors and wholesale horticulture businesses. The nursery publishes opening hours of Monday to Friday, 8am to 12pm and 1pm to 4pm, with longer hours from 7am to 5pm in March to June and in September and October. This is a nursery that puts its effort into production rather than building a retail shop for end gardeners.

Three different catalogue counts

There are three numbers for the size of this nursery, and they do not measure the same thing. The home page says the nursery holds more than 1800 varieties ready to be used. The filtered webshop page currently shows 2476 items. Crawling the product listing page by page gives 2893 product links, of which 11 are sales aids such as display stands and price labels, leaving 2882 plant entries spread across 468 genera. The site does not explain the difference between the three, so it is worth saying which figure you are citing.

By genus, the largest counts are tulips with 297 items, daffodils with 99, irises with 78, ornamental onions with 77, cranesbills with 63, crocuses with 63, asters with 62, lilies with 62 and hostas with 54. Bulbs carry a heavy share of the whole list, and the navigation gives them a section of their own. The filtering is unusually detailed: besides flower colour, flowering period, plant height, light, soil pH and water demand, there are labels for scent, edible use, drought tolerance, salt tolerance, snail resistance, non-toxicity, evergreen habit and bee forage, going down to whether a plant spreads by rhizomes, grows as a clump or forms a mat. The catalogue is split into 30 product categories, covering flowering perennials, groundcovers, roof greening, ferns, ornamental grasses, edibles, aquatic plants and ready-made hedges.

Growing practices and own propagation

The nursery sums up its production approach as greener every year. In practice it means using only organic fertilisers, having reduced the peat content of its growing media for years to a claimed half of what it was, applying inputs such as vermicompost tea to keep plants vigorous and resistant to pests and disease, shipping plants only in reusable containers and taking the pots back for reuse, and running a newly installed photovoltaic system that charges the 12 electric vehicles on site. Young plants are raised in house, and most of the photographs the nursery posts show freshly cut and freshly potted young plants.

Tools and services for trade customers

What the nursery offers trade customers goes well beyond the plants themselves. Beetplaner is a border planning tool that reads the nursery’s live stock figures, so every plant a plan calls for can actually be ordered on the spot. The tool won the TASPO award for B2B product idea of the year in Berlin in 2023, taken jointly by the nursery and its Stauden Ring partners. Delivery runs on two lines: for landscaping contracts the plants are picked per site and delivered straight to the construction site; for garden centres they are sorted by display area before dispatch. Stock is counted in full every week and quality assessed, and the results are synced to the webshop several times a day. A phone app reads the barcode on a plant label and takes you straight to that variety, and landscape contractors can place orders from site. The nursery also runs customer seminars; the 2023 event brought 374 participants from 128 companies.
