History and Family Stewardship
GartenBaumschule Menger, located in Erlangen-Bruck, Bavaria, is a family nursery approaching its centenary. Robert Menger founded it in 1929 on land at Fürstenweg, initially cultivating apple orchards, vegetables and fruit-tree saplings; after 1945 production shifted toward compulsory food crops, and from 1959 cut flowers were added – freesias first, followed by roses, carnations, gerbera and stock. Richard Menger took over in 1960, moving the main entrance to Baumschulenweg in 1969. Karl and Winfried Menger jointly assumed leadership in 1993; Karl became sole proprietor in 2013 and the address was formally renamed Baumschulenweg 15. On 1 January 2023 the business passed into its fourth generation, with brothers Markus and Thomas Menger jointly running the GbR – Markus focusing on customer service and consulting, Thomas on sales, production and procurement – while Karl remains involved as a retired master gardener.
Plant Range and Production System
The nursery cultivates around 4,500 m² of greenhouse and 600 m² of outdoor beds, supplemented by partner growers in the region. Its catalogue covers garden trees, flowering and deciduous shrubs, climbing plants, roses, conifers, fruit plants, hardy perennials, summer flowers for beds and balconies, Mediterranean tub plants, vegetables, garden bonsai and seed. Bedding and balcony plant production has run at scale since 1995 and now exceeds 200 varieties; from 2022 the nursery has specialised in raising climbing plants. Local produce is also stocked: vegetables from the Knoblauchsland district near Nuremberg (potatoes, onions, salad), seasonal fruit from the Fränkische Schweiz, and spirits from small Franconian distilleries.
Services, Facilities and On-Site Activities
Four core services extend the nursery beyond plant retail: overwintering of Mediterranean tub plants (with a minimum chargeable area of 0.25 m² per customer), regional roll-turf laying and grass seeding, tree and shrub pruning plus small felling, and gift vouchers redeemable in stages. Each overwintered plant carries its own identification label and receives watering, fertilising, pruning and pest-disease management throughout the season. The shop also carries gift plants, climbing supports, organic and mineral fertilisers, growing media and bark products, plant-protection and strengthening agents, planters and cachepots, and decorative items including figures and small fountains. From early June to late October, customers may pick their own fruit vegetables in the greenhouses, choosing from roughly fifteen tomato varieties, eight paprika, four aubergine and six chilli cultivars.
Gardening Seminars and Community Engagement
The nursery runs a regular programme of gardening seminars for the general public and an “Abenteuer Gärtnerei” (Gardening Adventure) programme for primary-school children, with the 2026 children’s series held 21-25 September in two daily slots at 08:45 and 10:15 and capped at two classes per school. Public seminars cover fruit-tree and berry pruning, rose planting and care, home-garden vegetable growing and routine lawn maintenance; tailored sessions for groups of 15 to 25 are available on request. The website hosts an accompanying series of tip sheets on planting roses, overwintering tub plants, hardening hardy perennials, sowing vegetables, grafting tomatoes and aubergines, and lawn care, which customers consult throughout the gardening year.
Industry Memberships and Quality Certification
The nursery is a member of the Bund deutscher Baumschulen (BdB, German Nursery Growers’ Federation) and carries the “GartenBaumschule” quality seal subject to periodic external inspection. It also participates in the Aktionsgemeinschaft GartenBaumschulen in BdB, the Gartenbaugruppe Erlangen, the Erzeugerring für Hochbaumschulpflanzen in Bayern e.V., the Bayerische Baumschulbörse and the Gesellschaft deutscher Rosenfreunde. Alongside the BdB seal, the nursery has co-founded the “Ihre Regionalgärtnerei” (Your Local Nursery) cooperative, championing locally grown, locally sold, locally acclimatised plants. The on-site selection of fruit brandies and liqueurs from Edelbrennerei Haas in Pretzfeld was awarded the 2016 Bundesehrenpreis für Spirituosen, Germany’s federal honour for spirits, complementing the nursery’s reputation for quality sourcing.
