About the Nursery
Kwekerij De Tuinstek is a small family-run perennial nursery near the village of Wieringerwaard in the province of North Holland in the north of the Netherlands. It is run by Thijs, the owner, and focuses on a wide range of perennials, pot plants and herbs, with a particularly strong collection of Salvia cultivars as the nursery’s signature line. The site works as a small “look, learn and buy” destination: visitors can chat with Thijs in the seating area behind the nursery, walk the display borders, and take plants home the same day.
Cultivation Method and Brand Identity
The nursery is committed to sustainable, environmentally friendly propagation: all plants are grown outdoors under natural conditions, so they transplant into a home garden with almost no settling-in time. A large share of the catalogue is made up of nectar plants for bees, butterflies and other pollinators, which lets home gardeners support these vulnerable insects at the same time as they plant up their own borders. The Salvia collection is the nursery’s signature, and the range keeps growing year on year; salvias can be grown as annuals, perennials or semi-shrubs, flower from June to November, and are excellent nectar plants for bees, bumblebees and butterflies. The nursery also keeps a chemical-free organic block for “onbespoten biologische planten” (unsprayed biological plants) that organic garden designers can buy into without second thoughts.
Top 10 Plants for Butterflies
The nursery website publishes a Top 10 list of plants for butterflies, drawing on the in-house experience: Buddleja (butterfly bush), Verbena bonariensis, Knautia arvensis (field scabious), Hesperis matronalis (dame’s rocket), Sedum spectabile (ice plant), Aster novi-belgii (New York aster), Eupatorium maculatum (Joe-Pye weed), Lavandula (lavender), Erysimum ‘Bowles Mauve’ (wallflower) and single-flowered Tagetes. Most of these are also long-flowering perennials, which makes them the core of the classic Dutch “butterfly-friendly” border combination.
Consulting, Webshop and Community
The nursery offers in-person advice (Advies) and full planting-plan (beplantingsplan) services: customers describe how the garden will be used, the soil, sun exposure and colour preferences, and the nursery will design and source the matching plant list. The nursery supports local garden clubs (Tuinclubs) for group purchases and runs a regular column called “Thijs tuiniert” with practical seasonal tips. The site also has an Agenda of public open days and a full Webshop for mail-order customers who cannot visit in person. Beyond plants, the nursery will help with garden-design questions and colour-combination advice, and can suggest more weatherproof alternatives if the conditions are tricky.
Visiting and Media Presence
Opening hours are wider than most Dutch garden centres: Monday to Saturday 9:00–17:00, Sunday closed. Visitors can come in person to walk the nursery, look at the demonstration borders, and ask Thijs for plant suggestions. Note the rule “no dogs anywhere on the property, including the car park” — this is to keep both visitors and the display borders calm. There is no separate shop-front; the nursery blends physical display with the online webshop, so plants can be ordered online for collection or shipping. The site is in the village of Wieringerwaard in North Holland, within easy reach of Amsterdam, Alkmaar and Den Helder, and is a popular weekend stop for Dutch-northern gardeners. Thijs regularly appears in Dutch gardening press and on TV, and the nursery runs the “Thijs tuiniert” content stream in collaboration with local garden clubs. The brand is positioned as “sustainable propagation + pollinator-friendly + Salvia and perennial specialism”, which sits in the wider European naturalistic-planting trend rather than the mass greenhouse model. In customer and trade feedback the most cited strengths are the Salvia collection size and Thijs’s own plant suggestions, both of which keep De Tuinstek regularly referenced in the Dutch perennial-nursery world.
